I have observed that with both socialism and zionism, the intensity and certainty of many people's views seems to be inversely correlated to their familiarity with Marx or Herzl, respectively. So as a White American, lemme explain Shintaoism...(1/ERR_MAX_INTEGER)

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Given the Green Party of England and Wales* turns towards antisemitism (I would have had to leave my childhood synagogue under their new policy), we can set the 10-year timer for their turn to transphobia. Just like Labor before them. *Scotland was also not on board in 1290, not coincidentally.

this isn't some abstract argument either: all of our decades of experience with large, complex safety-critical systems shows that building a safety culture is the only way to manage and mitigate risk responsibly... and that's impossible to reconcile with a longtermist utilitarian perspective

when emerging technologies are guided by long-termist utilitarianism, the public gets the deaths and doesn't get the benefits, while the Musks and Kalanicks get vast wealth... the current LLM/AI space is different in many ways, but utilitarian arguments should still be a massive, screaming red flag

An underappreciated fact about far-right populists is that they are terrible at governing, especially in the longer run. Trump is a case in point every single day, but systematic studies shows that this is the case more generally. As this study shows, after 15 years they lower GDP per capita with

AI really doesn’t offer nearly the benefit it needs to to get people to pay for it, and I think there’s a lot of denial from people over-invested (financially and emotionally) in it.

I just had an odd thought while drifting off to sleep: Can an LLM pass the Brown M&Ms Test? When I first read about it, I (Poli Sci/Theatre '05) thought it was absolutely brilliant. It also strikes me as the sort of detail that an LLM might or might not include in a summary.

The modern scientific method is about as old as the earliest internal combustion engines. Think of the many things (and philosophies) humanity invented before we were able to realize that "I think this is true" might not be the best way of understanding the world.

What should you do if you pull up on a car crash before emergency services arrive? Let me walk you through what I did yesterday while driving with the family to the grocery store. Traffic backed up ahead of us and around a corner someone rear ended another car, there was airbag deployment.

The Battle of Cable Street became the defining moment in the history of British antifascism. It also changed the law; Parliament passed the Public Order Act 1936, which included a ban on wearing political uniforms in public. We should remember, thank & salute every one of those early anti-fascists.

It actually gets worse. A lot of mycology texts are like "this ordinary brown mushroom is called 'Destroying Angel' and this other one is called 'Death Cap' and as you can see these edible ones over here look nearly identical if you're not fully up to date on modern phylogenetics".
Screenshot of a paragraph from the article:

"Roeske seemingly has no medical degree that Futurism could identify. Instead, his main gig appears to be selling capsules of mushroom powder to his more than 500,000 Instagram followers, while promoting woo-woo practices on his podcast, like staring at the Sun to strengthen your eyes."

There is a strange mind-blindness at work, where someone who finds a tool useful for a specific task has difficulty understanding when another person has said "I'm sorry, I don't see how this is useful to me". I know I've been like that when evangelizing for martial arts.

For perspective, $1.4B is at the high end of what it costs to develop a new drug, so let's say new class instead of new-in-class. And that's over many years. Make a list of the new drugs you hoped for this decade. One of them, and it will be random, is Not Gonna Happen. Each year this continues.

What's fascinating is what the next lines of Psalm 33 say: It emphasizes that we are all created in the divine image, and reminds us that Kings are not defined by force, nor warriors by strength. It's a good set of books, and a shame few people bother reading.
Starting from Psalm 33, verse 13:

"G_d looks down from heaven
and sees all humankind.
From G_d's dwelling place the divine gaze touches
on all the inhabitants of the earth -
the One who fashions the hearts of them all,
who discerns their doings.
Kings are not delivered by a large force;
warriors are not saved by great strength;

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Good luck fooling people who are hard of hearing and read lips. It's hard to communicate how wrong it is when you're "hearing" one thing from someone's lips and something different from the speakers. Good thing SV doesn't think we're human, it lets them ignore us when testing.
