You cannot convince me that frat brothers organically walked into separate police interviews using the same word, “consensual,” and that it wasn’t coordinated. Especially after a witness told police there was allegedly a fraternity meeting to get everyone “on the same page”.

Maybe the most culturally connected I feel to Mayor Mamdani is that every single progressive Jew has also been called both a Zionist stooge and a Hamas stooge by people on opposite sides.

Tonight we read the heartrending words of those who lost Israeli loved ones on Oct 7th — and Palestinian loved ones in the three years since. We said kaddish for all of them. We refused to compromise on anyone’s humanity. No amount of shouting stopped us. May their memory be for a blessing.

This is the issue with saying AI will cure diseases too. Getting data is the limitation. Saying AI can cure all diseases without needing scientists is like saying AI can make a world-champion basketball team by replacing the coaches. You still need athletes who can make great plays and decisions.

I'm increasingly frustrated that people who are anti-AI aren't being taken seriously, and taking a page out of my thoughts on why the anti-trans backlash got as far as it did I'm starting to think the anti-AI side isn't extreme enough.

Help, I can't breathe 😆🥊
LADY BOXERS. Lady boxers are not new. A challenge to fight and an acceptance between lady boxers appeared in ‘‘The Daily Post' as far back as 1728. The advertisements are too long to quote in full, but the challenge was issued by ‘‘Ann Field, of Stroke-Newington, ass-driver,” to Mrs ‘Stokes, styled the English Championess, “to a trial of the best skill in boxing, for 10 pounds, fair rise or fall.”” Mrs Stokes acoepted the challenge, none too politely, it must be said. She referred to ‘‘the famous Stoke-Newington ass-woman,”’ and went on to say ‘‘the blows which I will present her will be more difficult to digest than she ever gave her ass." Perhaps some sporting enthusiast will be able to tell us result of this encounter.

Shitgenstein

I met a traveler from an inland state
Who said: Two vast and humming racks of steel
Stand in the cornfield. Near them, on the plain,
Half buried in weed, a broken server face lies,
Its stilled fans, its dulled and blinking lights,
Tell that its builders knew the hype well
Which once ran through these halls, now cold and still,
The hands that fed them and the minds that made:
And on the switchroom wall these words remain:
“My name is Jensen Huang, CEO of CEOs:
Look on my cloud compute, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that great digital ruin, boundless and bare
The autumn fields stretch flat and far away.

It may be broken and look unremarkable, but this is a rather unique cuneiform tablet, one of a handful written in the Akkadian language, but using the Ugaritic (consonantal) script, instead of logosyllabic signs. The tablets, from Ugarit, were produced around 1250 BCE, likely by the same scribe.

My Judaica publisher told me rabbis keep filling his Talmud margins so I asked how many margins he has and he said he just goes to print and adds wider margins afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding whitespace to rabbis and then his printer started crying.

This is why imperial collapses can often seem extraordinarily sudden: They come as the culmination of decades of undermining the institutions, relationships, and structures that keep states functioning. A jenga tower can stand with missing blocks until it's given a tiny push.

Coming from a poli sci background, it's wild that other fields are like "we had That Guy commit terrorism once and we're forever horribly embarassed." Poli sci '05 was "when overthrowing a government, here's how to minimize the collateral damage and number of mass graves". Yes, my field is crazy.

A picture of an Apple Adjustable Keyboard III, which is two halves of a white aluminium keyboard turned through 90 degrees and the text running vertically. on the right side running from top to bottom is zxcvb, asdfgh and qwerty columns. on the left side is the same damned mess. The two halves also tilt inwards towards each other.

Others have explained the reasoning (like renumbering in BASIC), but this thread is also a meta-example of the problem of people from outside of a field assuming that they know how technology will interact with that field. Most people in most fields are already familiar with tech.

The comments under this are unintentionally very funny and also an excellent example of why people outside of a field often dramatically overestimate the value of new technologies to said field. Legal paragraphs are like line numbers in BASIC code, and renumbering has similar ill effects.

How did this happen? Officially, proposals went through the same process as before: peer review, program officer recommendation, section head approval. Unofficially, the choice was taken out of SBE's hands, going above the directorate head, Christina Freyman and to NSF leadership.
In the past, panels of independent scientists vetted proposals; program officers recommended those found worthy, and section heads approved them. But a new, unofficial process has removed decision-making power from all directorate staff and leadership. Only a few proposals in administration priority areas, such as cognitive science and AI, were allowed to move ahead, according to the former staffers. Program officers sent them to Freyman, who met with Simon Malcomber, NSF’s chief science officer. “Then he would come back with some decision,” a former staffer explains. “So it wasn’t his decision-making. He was in consult with others.” If Malcomber said a proposal was acceptable, a program officer was given the green light to officially recommend it. “They were very, very careful in terms of never putting anything in writing about what the process was,” the former staffer says. NSF did not respond to questions about the process.

I think if you have a code, you need to stick with it, and one of my codified beliefs is that I don’t mock people for their physical appearance. To have exceptions is to say it’s okay to do so, and I view this as a deontological matter, so I don’t do this to my enemies or rivals either.

Given that markets emerge everywhere, we should ask some careful questions: On what terms does that happen? Who may benefit? To what degree? How do we fix things when market behavior hurts bystanders? How do we keep it from setting up unhealthy concentrations of power? Those are useful questions.
