In Trump’s first term, he escalated in Afghanistan, bombed Syria, escalated with Iran, and loosened rules of engagement to allow more civilian casualties. Out of office, he said the problem in Gaza was Israel held back too much. But for some reason, “anti-war” types didn’t think that mattered.

My greatest frustrating has been with policy wonks who persist in thinking we can just keep doing normal policy analysis ("calling balls and strikes") in this situation. The President of the United States is both lawless and out of his mind. That preempts all normal discussion.

If you want to really know how the outrage machine gets fired up: 1. Schmitt plans to drop “bombshell” on Smith 2. Someone plants story that Schmitt is a Vance VP contender to run same day 3. Right-wing Twittersphere gets talking points 4. Schmitt steps in it 5. Scheduled tweets go out anyway

Trump had *lots* of other options for making himself colossally unpopular, and repeatedly TACOed right up to the edge of a disaster he couldn't back out of, each time concluding that he was untouchable because nothing too bad happened. He finally did it properly with Iran, and here we are.

We simply are not going to get out of this by just winning the next election & going back to governing. We can't keep doing this total failure of elite accountability. We've been doing it since Iran-Contra, & really since 1865. And we keep not fixing our broken anti-democratic institutions. Enough.

American conservatism may not be the absolute worst strain of conservatism in history, but it has to be the most intellectually bankrupt. “We ripped up all the established norms and now the new world is scary and different!” Wow, if only there was an ideology dedicated to conserving the old ways.
