On shared governance of universities. Which, it's worth remembering, is how European universities began: as self-governing organizations of scholars, who students could pay to learn from. Not as employees of anyone else, not as servants to a board of regents or CEO.

This is the basic trick of Roko's Basilisk. Like many supposed thought experiments noodled over by guys who thought Heath Ledger's Joker was the most important moral philosopher of the 21st century, it dresses up as an ethical conundrum what is in truth a deeply evil enticement to abandon the concept of human intention altogether.
Decision-making truly cannot get more animal and reactionary than to extend fixed conclusions about what humanity is like out into the imagined indefinite future, conceived as boundary walls defining the path that future can take, and react to that future before it has even had a chance to
arrive. It makes the future into the past. It is inherently regressive, fascist.

I think when we hem and haw about people going no-contact with their families and what it says about society, what we're often doing is revealing our own discomfort with seeing others starting to pull blocks out of the Jenga tower of Empire and refusing to suffer Just Because.

There are reasons other than net take-home pay that generations of American parents steered their kids toward college. I don't see how "go into construction!" is helpful unless paired with more robust worker protections and a true safety net, especially in right to work states.

Yes I've tried that and we then don't post anything. See nearly any post from the safety account as an example.
Users keep demanding policy explanations daily and then make up their own random stories when there's usually an objective and repeatable process on our end (since we train mods).

Pretty basic stuff.
Transit should be good enough to replace a car.
The goal of transit shouldn't be to technically have transit. It should be to make owning a car optional for more people.

For a household that can go from two cars to one, better transit isn't just transportation infrastructure. It's affordability infrastructure.

As Kelowna grows, I want us to judge transit by a much more practical question:

Can this system actually replace a car?

That means frequency, reliability, useful routes and connections to the places people actually need to goWe need compassion and order.

People need a path out of homelessness. Everyone else needs to feel safe now.

I don't think those ideas conflict.

Someone living on the street deserves a realistic path toward housing, treatment, healthcare and stability. A business owner also shouldn't have to accept repeated theft, vandalism or open drug use outside their business while we wait for those long-term systems to work.

Kelowna already has more infrastructure addressing this than I understood when I started investigating it: housing programs, outreach coordination, RCMP, Bylaw, shelters, transitional housing and a Community Safety strategy.

So my question has changed.

Where is the system still breaking down? What problems can the City actually solve? What requires the Province? What can we do immediately without simply moving disorder from one neighborhood to another?

That's what I'm investigating now.Growth should pay for growth.
Kelowna is growing rapidly. That growth creates enormous value, especially when City decisions allow land to be developed more intensively.

Some of that value should come back to the community that created it.

When new development requires roads, parks, utilities, transit and other infrastructure, existing residents shouldn't automatically be left with the bill. And when a zoning decision substantially increases the value of private land, I want to understand how much of that value we're capturing for the public.

Growth should pay for growth, and growth should leave Kelowna wealthier than it found it.

MEANWHILE, in Canada, meet Brady Rogers, the reluctant politician who's fed up and thinks he can do better. His sign says "I barely want to do this." His website says, "I guess I'm running for Kelowna city council." His business? Recycling plastic into cool things.
lawn sign with a grumpy man in a "DADLIFE" sweatshirt and the sign says "I barely want to do this" with his name and campaignHi, I’m Brady.
Do I enjoy politics? No.

Do I know what I’m doing? No.

But am I qualified? Also no.

I was born in Williams Lake and raised in Kelowna since I was 10. These are the streets I biked every day, the cars I threw crab apples at (sorry), and the parks I played in. Seeing this city grow has been cool, but with growth has come a whole new spectrum of challenges. Running for council is the last thing I saw myself doing this year. I don’t like meetings, I don’t like having to be certain places at certain times, and I’m allergic to stuffy offices. But unfortunately, I happen to like Kelowna, and think I can help do some good.I guess I’m running for Kelowna city council.
Support the campaignI graduated from UBCO in 2015ish (long story) and worked for 4 years as a robotic automation engineer. As cool as the job was, it was soulless, and I wanted to use my abilities for more than just helping huge companies save money.

Since 2019, I’ve been building The Rogerie.
Starting as a farmers market booth beside the mall, my wife and I began turning plastic waste into new products in our laundry room. Seven painful years later, and we have a pretty awesome shop downtown by Sprout (come check it out!) where you’ll find me just about every day.
