lots of talking up of parties at the moment. Some of it takes on life of its own (self fulfilling prophecies) whilst other parties with much more representation get little/no talking up. Is this right? Time to demand a review of the way we cover politics petition.parliament.uk/petitions/71...

@davidallengreen.bsky.social USBs usually exist in quantum states 🙃
It is a well known fact that you must spin a USB three times before it will fit.

From this, we can gather that a USB has three states.

Up position

Down position

Superposition

Until the USB is observed it will stay in the superposition. Therefore it will not fit until observed - except for in cases of USB tunneling.

Team Open University is back on BBC tonight for the University Challenge quarter-finals. If you watch, remember the importance of widening access to education for all. We are playing for the carers, the prisoners, the disabled, the kids who had to work to support their family and everyone else ♥️

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.
Excerpt from a public letter Roald Dahl wrote encouraging people to vaccinate their children.

Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it. Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn’t do anything.

“Are you feeling all right?” I asked her.

“I feel all sleepy,” she said.

In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead.

The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her.

On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunized against measles. I was unable to do that for Olivia in 1962 because in those days a reliable measles vaccine had not been discovered. Today a good and safe vaccine is available to every family and all you have to do is to ask your doctor to administer it.

The real MeToo “cancel culture” was what happened to the women and other victims who came forward. They were retraumatized, harassed, humiliated, sued, fired, and blacklisted. Then they were the subject of a revisionist history that MeToo went “too far” and deserved a reactionary backlash

Word of day is ‘unasinous’ (17th century): united in stupidity. A riff on ‘unanimous’: which comes from the Latin for ‘one mind’. ‘Unasinous’ means ‘one ass’.

Happy birthday to this unimprovable bunch of words.
"I met [name redacted] recently—a stooped, coyote-eyed man with small hands, fingers like little sausages and soft as those of an old, old lady. He caresses his fingers in his lap as though they were precious and in danger. To shake hands with him is like touching the teats of an old cow."

Yeah, I tried it once year and it worked really well. I cut them back a bit, put them in the conservatory where the aphids have a field day 🙄 and then cut them back a bit more in Feb/march and they just start going again.

I've had loads in other years but this was pathetic! I've found I have more success by growing them one year, saving them over winter, and then they produce more the next year. Maybe because they take so long to get going!
