The first Wednesday of October, our sister organisation: Queen City Urbanist Book Club is talking Escaping the Housing Trap by author of Strong Towns Charles Marohn Jr. Join us Wednesday October 7th from 7pm to 9pm at the Cathedral Community Centre if you'd like to join the discussion!
A poster for the Queen City Urbanist Book Club for their Wednesday October 7th meeting from 7pm to 9pm at the Cathedral Community Centre including a picture of the cover of the book Escaping the Housing Trap by Charles Marohn, Jr and a quote from the book: "When housing becomes a good investment for homeowners by reliably going up in value year after year, it impairs the ability of non-homeowners to purchase a home. When housing as a form of esteem or self-actualization leads home-owners to demand exclusionary zoning practices, it makes it difficult for needed housing to be built.”

Bike/pedestrian networks don't take 30 years to build. Stop accepting those timelines in your community. The best practices have been proven & they already exist. Safety should already be the #1 priority. The ROI is unbeatable. The timeline is a moral document and it shouldn't be generational.

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

Tram in Trondheim Norway, population 218k. Though Trondheim is 13° further north than Regina SK (pop 226k), it is much warmer. However, it gets considerably more precipitation & much less sunlight. But they'll tell you that Regina is has too few people & too much winter to have trams. #yqrcc

What's Up With That: Building Bigger Roads Actually Makes Traffic Worse
The concept is called induced demand, which is economist-speak for when increasing the supply of something (like roads) makes people want that thing even more. Though some traffic engineers made note ...

Making it all the more egregious that we continue to see a plurality of councillors elected that have never attended a meeting or engaged with the city in a meaningful way, don’t understand these problems, and fail to bring forward any ideas or actions to try to address them.

This analogy is more apt than he realizes. The city's primary revenue is collecting property tax. If they sell this land and accept that they won't be collecting property tax, the city will effectively being trying to build a farm on rocks. They will never harvest property tax on this land again.

Maybe you’ve seen the #yqrcc news stories about Brandt trying to buy half of the REAL district land and buildings from the city. They’d pay $6.5 million because the buildings are so busted it would take almost $80 million to bring them up to like new conditions. But there are a lot more costs. /1

This Wednesday will be the final reading of the the 10% transit fair increase bylaw. This is the last opportunity for city council to reconsider. The previous reading vote passed with a split of 6-5. There's a possibility that a vote could change and the transit fare increase will not go into effect
