i mean at the end of the day that above all else is what misogyny is for. few men practice it for its own sake as true believers. they cling to it because they need it, because to men who are cynical or insecure enough it’s a huge life boost

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

The media has the AI threat all wrong
Generative AI is harming people today. We don’t need to waste time fantasizing about science fictional scenarios.

How much more proof do we need that people who are all-in on AI are cloistered thinkers (if they think at all anymore) who do not have the world’s best interests at heart????

I've never seen tangible proof that multi-family developments hurt property values, ever. But someone always complains. These days I'm inclined to say if you own a goddamn mansion you shouldn't be allowed to complain about anything, ever. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Whenever someone smart says, ‘I asked ChatGPT and it said xyz,’ I’m reminded of Baldur Bjarnason’s excellent article ‘The LLMentalist Effect: how chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic’s con.’ softwarecrisis.dev/letters/llme... #quitgpt #TheAICon @baldurbjarnason.com
The intelligence illusion seems to be based on the same mechanism as that of a psychic’s con, often called cold reading. It looks like an accidental automation of the same basic tactic.

By using validation statements, such as sentences that use the Forer effect, the chatbot and the psychic both give the impression of being able to make extremely specific answers, but those answers are in fact statistically generic.

The psychic uses these statements to give the impression of being able to read minds and hear the secrets of the dead.

The chatbot gives the impression of an intelligence that is specifically engaging with you and your work, but that impression is nothing more than a statistical trick.

This idea was first planted in my head when I was going over some of the statements people have been making about the reasoning of these ‘AI’.

I first thought that these were just classic cases of tech bubble enthusiasm, but no, ‘AI’ has both taken a different crowd and the believers in the ‘AI’ bubble sound very different from those of prior bubbles.

What does "bring your own power with you" mean, exactly? If private company Bell builds the province's biggest natural gas power plant, generating power equal to almost a fifth of the province's current maximum capacity, what kind of regulations will apply in a province with a Crown power monopoly?
