This chart is telling you about median wealth *for household heads* across generations -- that's a mix of actual distributional changes and compositional changes in headship. It is *not* the median household wealth of each generation!

Is America in a demographic crisis? Demographers don’t think so. I conducted a survey of U.S. demographers, and this is what I found: 3%: “The low birth rate is a demographic crisis” 25%: "serious concern” 53%: "should be monitored, but no intervention necessary” 20% :“not a problem at all.”
Fig. 1 The United States has a total fertility rate around 1.6. Which of these statements
comes closest to your view? N = 180

A striking regression in morally tolerant attitudes in the US between 2022 and 2026. In four editions of updating this graph, I haven't had to deal with a big reversal yet. How am I supposed to teach the next generation that the arc of the moral universe bends toward debauchery now?

What’s especially great is that this is getting coverage outside of political outlets - and that coverage includes info on the attacks on reproductive autonomy. This is part of the story in @usweeklymag.bsky.social www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-ne...
Rodrigo has been a outspoken advocate of abortion rights and reproductive health in the wake of the Dobbs decision, the landmark 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned the Constitutional right to abortion access and left more than 15 states — and nearly 63 million women and girls — facing outright or severely strict bans on the common procedure. (A reported one in four people with the capacity to get pregnant will have an abortion in their lifetime. As a result of abortion bans and funding, more than one-third of U.S. counties are considered maternity care deserts with limited or no access available to reproductive healthcare.)

If you're attending #ASA2026 in NYC later this week/next week, please join us bright & early on Monday for a session on pronatalism.
Desired Childbearing Amidst Rising Pronatalism: What Role for Sociology?
Mon, August 10, 8:00 to 9:30am, Sheraton, Floor: Third Floor, New York Ballroom West
Description
In the media and public at large, there is considerable concern about the appearance of a lower fertility rate in the United States, and around the world. These declines have given rise to a pronatalist politics that seek to shape Americans’ childbearing decisions. At the same time, there is evidence that Americans would like to have more children than they are currently having. Sociologists might be concerned about both of these trends under a Reproductive Justice (RJ) framework, which includes the right to not have children as well as to have children, along with resources and support necessary to do so. What is the role of sociology in this debate? What might allow all people to have and parent the children they want? To date, it is not clear that interventions like direct payment, tax credits, or parental leave policies are allowing people to fulfill their fertility desires. What’s more, some interventions might be coercive and/or perpetuate rather than ameliorate inequities related to gender, race, and class. This session will include discussion of policy interventions as well as broader sociological theory on topics such as changing family structures, gendered labor, romance and courtship, medically assisted reproduction, social movements, immigration, race and eugenics, and climate change. This panel discussion invites critical stances on questions of decreased fertility rates and changing population dynamics.Presider: Eliza Brown
Panelists: Sarah K. Cowan, Karen Benjamin Guzzo, Holly Hummer, Kate Tierney, Patrice Wright
Organizers: Eliza Brown, Nick Mark
