Well, I'm 20 years late to the party on this one but this is why it pays to hangout with the Earth Sciences people when you're near their building. TL;DR - Geology is complicated. It's good to ask geologists before you dig deep holes or you will learn SURPRISE GEOLOGY.

A really good demonstration that "reasoning" models are producing output that sounds like reasoning but reasoning is not what they seem to be doing.

everyone lucked the hell out on the terror attack today where the co-pilot stabbed the pilot, passengers took down the attacker *and* there seem to have been two off-duty pilots who were able to land the plane safely. Could have been one of the worst attacks for a while otherwise.

The "all anti-Zionism is always and forever antisemitism" people and the "all antisemitism becomes fine if we just say it's anti-Zionism, even if we're ranting about the Talmud" people reinforce one another, even if both sides utterly fail to see it.

This is obviously disgusting in so many ways. Gonna highlight one: Servicemember beard exemptions are all on religious or medical grounds. They're either Sikhs (mostly South Asian) or have a skin condition related to shaving curly hair (mostly African American). "No beardos" is racist as hell.

My hypothesis is that jurisdictions that let police screen rape cases arrest, prosecute, and convict at a lower rate than those that have prosecutors involved from day 1. We have never had data to test it, but we might now. This is one of my current projects.

Probably because the initial SpaceX secret sauce is "design your rocket like a server, ASSUME pieces will fail" So Falcon 9 was only 8 motors need to work for success. I suspect upper stage of Starship is that way too, with 5 of 6 sufficient.

I'm beginning to think "move fast and break things" is not a good way to get into orbit. I think the only part of the Falcon 9 program in that category was "landing", which was not on the critical path for actually making money but an attempt to get a lot more money in the process.
