For my fellow aging music listeners that still have a soft spot for Dinosaur Jr.: their new album continues to be Dinosaur Jr. as fuck. Catchy unstoppable rock n roll. There's something comforting about this band just giving me more of the same but less familiar. Love these old guys.

Based on my small sample size of my agent and current/past editors/editorial teams a lot of people in publishing have names that start with J. So, if you want to work in publishing and your name doesn’t start with a J … I suppose you could change it real quick.

Sometimes a young writer will assume I am straight and lecture me about why I shouldn’t write same sex relationships. I usually let them finish before mentioning that I had boyfriends before they were born. I am not straight. I am just middle-aged and wear dark colors. Happy bi visibility day!

It didn’t strike me as a teen watching Deep Space Nine, but looking back on it now making Sisko abandon his family in the show’s finale and sending Benny Russell to a sanitarium sure were a pair of all white writers room decisions. I get why Brooks might have conflicted feelings.

I've been very slowly rewatching Deep Space Nine for months and I'm savoring the 6th season now, which I think is the show at its peak. Just had Far Beyond the Stars on and dammit, we didn't appreciate Avery Brooks as an actor and director enough. He did a remarkable job at both in this episode.

Last night I went to a book launch for one of our local literary badasses (and super cool guys). We went out to the bar afterwards where I met an audiobook narrator who has done two of my favorite books from this year. Just a regular awesome night being a writer that loves writers in Portland.

I asked recently for advice from experienced authors as I approach my debut. My first takeaway is that I have really generous friends who shared sincere, helpful stuff. My other takeaway is that publishing is brutal and so many of us are carrying sorrow, poverty, and frustration on our backs.

When I was 19 I wrote, directed, and acted in a play at my university. I literally walked around with the playbill stapled to the front and back of my shirt. It isn’t that I am shameless or love being a billboard. It’s that too many people worked too hard for me to not embarass myself a little bit.

When I'm doing all the work for various publishing or community things, I sometimes have to make hard decisions. Being rude to me about it is probably not going to make me change my mind. It is much more likely to make me remember to exclude you from my deliberations faster in the future though.
