The degree to which the core professional development demand is "give me stuff I can use in class on Monday" reflects how chronically stressed the system is -- reflection, philosophy, the big picture are luxury items when time and resources are at a premium

This upcoming week, we'll try out this new end-of-unit system in our classroom: having students take picture of important moments of learning in their notebook and adding reflections to an ongoing document. Much better than typical "spiral checks," I hope!

It is the start of Banned Books Week and as such it's an EXCELLLLENT moment to donate to @authorsabb.bsky.social. We are laser focused on tbe single issue of fighting book bans. It's hard work, and we've done it with all volunteers for about 3 years-- and now we finally have a program manager.

Every damn time. Someone posted a talk about ableism, eugenics, and genocide. Commenter: people forget that Nazis sent the disabled to camps, too. No, sweetheart, people forget they used us as prototypes for the camps. They tested mass murder on disabled people first. We’re cut out of that story.

People aren’t faking their disabilities, they’re faking being well. We know society hates us. We know we will be judged for using assistive devices. Many of us take years to get the courage to lean in to accommodations. Stop judging. Help us build a more inclusive world.

This is a revelation to me. Are most history depts not already "service depts"? I assumed they were. In any given year I might teach 500 students, most of them in the intro surveys, and maybe 25 of those 500 are history majors. But it's important to note how admins set these classes up to fail.

We know that the best way to draw someone into a history major is in a class of 12. That's why you don't get classes of 12 as a service dept. You get 180 students, in two-hour chunks, with no breakout sessions or teaching assistants. You are set up to fail, at least in terms of attracting majors

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.
