Me: Does anyone have any questions? Mr. Neibauer, why do we have to read these textbook articles? Why can’t we keep reading and annotating short stories like an octopus? Me: It’s complicated (but not really)… #TeacherSky #EduSky thebrokencopier.substack.com/p/a-tool-for...

I had an interesting moment today in class. I had to give my students a passage from a standardized basal textbook; probably written by AI. My students asked if they should close read and annotate the passage. I told him that they didn’t have to. #TeacherSky 1/3

Making reading visible for students is the foundation of close reading, but it is the simplicity of this definition that makes it challenging. #TeacherSky #EduSky #SubstackSky adrianneibauer.substack.com/p/close-read...

the actual price of college these days is genuinely a befuddling number to look at. (Like: there are many many complicated things going on with college right now and no easy solutions but I still think we somehow don't talk enough about that price tag. It's ludicrous.)

This article captures a lot of what I believe math education should be, even though I'm not sure the gym analogy is the best one. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
The great challenge of teaching is not to transmit information—machines do that cheaply now—but to engineer those moments of genuine understanding reliably enough that students come to crave them. The intellectual equivalent of the body’s feedback is real and, when it arrives, more powerful than any endorphin. It is the “Aha!” of a hard problem suddenly solved, a proof that clicks into place, the moment when an argument you’ve been wrestling with finally holds its own weight. I have seen it on students’ faces, and there’s nothing quite like it.

"One of the first lessons I teach my students is how to listen to each other." This post had me at the very first sentence, and it made me think/appreciate a lot about how the more-difficult, student-centered way of building discussion culture is still the more worthwhile path. Great Monday read!

Word problems can feel like a lot for young learners. That’s where CUBES comes in: a step-by-step scaffold to help get them started. 🧱 Remember: It’s just one tool in their toolkit, not the whole toolbox. Keep pushing them to reason through the actual math, but starting with CUBES can help.

Do not forget: this vision of education—students with headphones on staring at screens—is VERY unpopular, especially right now. The vast majority of students don't want it. The vast majority of teachers don't want it. The vast majority of families don't want it. That's the story.

No better time to be wrestling with the how, what, where, and when of reading than right now.
"If theory thus addresses the how, what, and where and when of our practices of reading, utopia, understood as the fundamental human principle of hope, offers an effective answer to the why: beyond any liberal individualist notions of pleasure or self-cultivation, we read in order to immerse ourselves in the shared story of the past and to hope for the future-and, in hoping, begin to move toward realizing more fulfilling and just ways of collective being and doing in the world" (18).
