You guys SUBSIDIES DON'T SHAPE OUR DIET. (mostly) Subsidies generally FOLLOW farmer preferences, rather than create them. And farmers grow what people will buy. Here's @hannahritchie.bsky.social on how subsidies affect me at prices: hannahritchie.substack.com/p/meat-subsi...

A little, but not much. Certainly not enough to make them cheaper than meat substitutes.

Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.

Scientists have been publishing climate models since ~1970. A good way to evaluate their skill is to compare what they expected to happen in the years after the model was published to observed climate changes. It turns out most models were pretty spot-on:

Yep. People have started to appreciate (and question) the fact that we use 30-40% of our US corn supply for ethanol, but it flies under the radar that we now use 40-50% of our US soybean oil supply for biodiesel. BTW all this supplies only like 5% of US transport fuel. Inefficient resource use.

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

The papers have the following titles:

1. We're more doomed than you thought
2. We're more doomed than you thought, but theoretically we could still be OK if everything works out perfectly
3. Here is a solution that fixes everything if implemented everywhere by everyone forever
4. My sector isn't part of the problem (funded by sector)
5. Here are some highly technical results, good luck understanding them
6. Counting up carbon in trees, plants, and soils
7. Technology is good
8. Technology is bad
9. Great result in a specific place and context! But headlines will make it seem applicable everywhere
10. People are counting stuff wrong, here is a more right but more complicated solution
11. Let's put more nature on farms
12. Let's put less farms in nature
