Just been out for an early run here in Hannover. 25C at 7am but the reason I could go out is the shade - lots of trees here in lovely long avenues. The UK is going to need much more of this. And trees take time to grow, so we’d better start now!

Oxford's temperature of 33.7ºC on Tuesday was more statistically anomalous than the Lytton, BC heatwave in June 2021, using standard deviations from a detrended 1991-2020 average for both locations. A staggering statistical anomaly that shows the gravity of the records broken.
Comparative graph titled “Two record-shattering heat events, statistically compared – Lytton, BC (June 2021) vs Oxford (May 2026)”. Both panels show daily maximum temperature anomalies in standard deviations (σ) from the detrended 1991-2020 mean. Lytton (left) reaches +4.16σ in late June, setting a new Canadian record of 49.6°C. Oxford Radcliffe (right) reaches +4.38σ in May, setting a new local May record of 33.7°C. Red lines represent observed 2021 and 2026 temperatures, respectively.

Had to stop to photograph these old pollarded #sycamore #trees while out assessing a farm building yesterday in #Stirlingshire 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 A big favourite for planting around farms and estates in the Improvement Era, because they grew so fast here. Was called the Scottish Plane in 18th/19th century records.
Three mature sycamore trees photographed on a sunny winter day, silhouetted against a cloudless blue sky. They have a distinctive pollard shape, straight stems up to about 2m height where a candelabra shaped canopy emerges. This is because they were managed on a small farm and were cut high to protect the delicate regrowth from grazing stock. They would have been cut back at that height every few years to provide useful pole size timber for the farm. Photo Copyright Coralie Mills 2025
