Header: The Episcopal Church with the Episcopal shield / logo

Text: “The Episcopal Church has long formally opposed the death penalty, and more recently we have called for an immediate moratorium on its use,” Rowe said in a statement. “The idea of live-streaming a firing squad execution is reprehensible in the extreme and will cause moral injury to everyone involved. We need to ask ourselves who we have become as a nation when senior officials decide to make a spectacle of state-sponsored violence.”

I think they have got slightly better at timetabling rail replacement services than the bad old days but it still feels too dangerous.

It’s an expensive irritation but I don’t want to miss that train or it will be a very late night indeed…

Looking at the trains back to college tomorrow and the WCML issue is going to cause problems. I think I might have to get a taxi to Tamworth as I do not trust the timetabled five minute connection when the first leg is a rail replacement bus….

I published an article in JMEMS about how rare such spectacular executions actually were in late medieval England compared to later periods and very much made this point about how the ascription of “medieval” to what is in fact the modern theater of cruelty serves to absolve us.

'The Parish Bazaar,' (c1947) Norman Blamey was a consummate draughtsman; his early work specialised in capturing everyday events. This painting is based on a Christmas sale, which took place annually in the Parish Hall of St Pancras Old Church in Crowndale Road.

Without prompt, vigorous, costly attention, the 21stC will see the utter devastation of England’s reputation as a world leader in higher education, presided over by Tories, Labour, and Lib Dems, with hardly a word of protest from other parties.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

This is a brilliant thread. While there was a lot of violence in the Middle Ages, it is crucial to acknowledge that our contemporary attitudes - in their myriad varieties - are all born out of our own historical context. The abhorrent ones are not relict medieval sentiments, but equally modern.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.
The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

And, ironically, I think the problems aren't that dissimilar! Both of them are too online (Polanski is too short termist and reactive, Badenoch is inconsistent and mad), both of them have pursued a base first strategy that is running out of time, and both rely on their opponent imploding.

Anecdotally what seems to be happening is that the Home Office is refusing all student visa applications from certain countries. The Treasury should have told them to knock if off years ago but at this point the FCO needs to tell them to stop trying to cause an international incident.

It would seem the Home Office has now acquired the ability to impose, without visibility or accountability, shadow bans on students coming to British universities from particular countries. How? Because of the interaction between indiv visa decisions (made by HO alone) and visa rules for unis 1/?

salva me ex ore leonis save me from the lion's mouth [From the Cathedral Museum of Santiago de Compostela]
View of a twelfth-century stone sculpture depicting a lion's head with a man trapped between its jaws. The picture is taken in front of the lion, so all that is visible is the nose, the curved teeth on the sides of the mouth, the human teeth in the front of the mouth, and the outlines of a human crouching within the mouth itself.

Reminder that "biological sex" is not a thing that exists. It is a legal fiction in every place that refers to it. In the UK, in the equality act, it means "the sex that was written on your original birth certificate." Incidentally, it doesn't matter if that's due to a clerical error.
