"Philosophers say that consciousness is a structural phenomenon of how information flows / how causal relations are meshed.... but what if the structures were made out of cheese???? Sounds silly now doesn't it???" Political pundits suddenly opining on phil of mind has been pure torture.

One-over-many immediately came to mind, and I think it’s still a respectable piece of reasoning. Third Man is, though, still a Premier League piece of reasoning even now.
One way of drawing this out is to ask yourself: quick, what was Plato's argument in favour of the forms existing? What was Bentham's (or Mozi's) for utilitarianism? What was Hobbes (or Xunzi's)
argument for human nature being selfish and conflict-laden? Now my audience is sufficiently nerdy that I bet some of yinz really could answer those, or at least one of those, from the top of your head. But I bet that many - even from among the professional
philosophers - could not. And I don't actually think that is cause for shame, instead I think it is telling us something - articulating the positions was in each case an important contribution, particular arguments that may or may not have been deployed in their favour much less so.

The sort of people who think “would you let your daughter marry one?” a decisive objection to interracial marriage haven’t noticed that by their lights it’s a decisive objection to the death penalty: executioners are generally despised and thought defiled, polluted, or seriously shamed by the job.

Bialy said the child's other parent is a police officer from a neighboring jurisdiction. He said the handgun found at the daycare was not a service weapon.
"I don't think there was any ill intent by truly anyone involved," he said. "I think it really falls back on safe security of a firearm, making sure that we know where our firearms are located, that they are not accessible to anyone."

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Complicity and corruption (from complicity in genocide) are both outcomes, I think.
My point is that "force for good" is an ends- oriented moniker, and one that requires
significant exploration of counterfactuals. Wiping our hands of both Likud and Hamas isn't the same thing as doing good, it's more
about feeling good. After 10/7, Israelis already think that killing Palestinians means protecting their children. Your strategy to make America "a force for good" is to make Israelis feel MORE vulnerable. That seems like an
obviously and fatally flawed plan to me.
