Text: “The Episcopal Church has long formally opposed the death penalty, and more recently we have called for an immediate moratorium on its use,” Rowe said in a statement. “The idea of live-streaming a firing squad execution is reprehensible in the extreme and will cause moral injury to everyone involved. We need to ask ourselves who we have become as a nation when senior officials decide to make a spectacle of state-sponsored violence.”

Abolish the death penalty.
Text:
The Episcopal Church has opposed the death penalty since at least 1958. In 1979, the 66th General Convention reaffirmed this position, calling on dioceses and members of the Church to work actively toward abolishing the death penalty in their states.

Every person is made in the image of God.

Our trans siblings are completely beloved by God. They belong in this Church in the altar and in the pew.

I ordained the Rev. Flourish Klink. They are a faithful priest and gifted pastor. I am proud to serve alongside them.

Their voice is important. When one of us is singled out, we stand together. That is what the Body of Christ does.

We meet Christ in one another.

Especially since the primary goal of the program (not this cruel administration’s, I realize) is to cover Americans who are falling into health care coverage gaps— crowing over kicking people off. This move makes the argument for expanding Medicare to be universal, like any decent country.

This is a terrific piece, and I especially appreciated the reference to NC Congressman George H. White's 1901 valedictory address to the US House. There would not be another Black member of Congress for 28 years - and no Black member from an ex-Confederate state until Barbara Jordan in 1973.
As White looked out across a now all-white Congress, he said he spoke on behalf of “an outraged, heartbroken, bruised and bleeding, but God-fearing people, faithful, industrious, loyal people — rising people, full of potential force.” His departure might be Black people’s “temporary farewell to the American Congress,” he said, but “phoenixlike, he will rise up some day and come again.” It took more than half a century.

Attended Sunday mass at my bishop’s former church, St. Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal Church in Rome; discovered it is beautiful and welcoming. Glad hear they were hosting a citywide ecumenical service for international day against homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia later in the afternoon. ⚓️
Interior view of St. Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal Church (San Paolo dentro le Mura), also known as the American Church in Rome. This was the first non-Roman Catholic Church built within the walls of Rome. It was by English architect George Edmund Street in Gothic Revival style of polychrome striped brick and stone, it was completed in 1880. The church contains several mosaics which are the largest works of pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones; this photo shows the mosaic semi-dome of the apse which is a beautiful and colorful depiction of Christ Enthroned in Heavenly Jerusalem (completed 1885). The selection of mosaic colors was a collaboration between Burne-Jones and William Morris. The ceiling is a field of blue with white stars.
