Has there ever been a moment in the history of modern education where in the space of a few years every single teacher and academic in every discipline is expected not only to have mastered, but be able (and willing) to teach a new, niche skill at the expense of their actual subject expertise?

Nuisance is that I put off my flu jab until Monday, so that my blood tests were before it (didn't want any interference in results). Don't think I have flu though as I'd feel rough all day if I had that. Temperature is normal. Won't go out today or tomorrow though, just in case

Every morning lately I wake up feeling rough. Bunged-up head and chest congestion. It clears within an hour but I'm deffo not right. Just sent Mr Shed out for lateral flow tests from our local pharmacy. Doubt it's covid but need to know as I've got to go for blood tests on Saturday for other stuff!

Me too. I've a file of personal keepsakes from that time. Poems written to me by friends, their short stories, etc. Mr Shed has a fantastic collection of letters from his best friend from when Mr Shed was on his exchange year in California. A slice of punk history as it happened on the ground 😊

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC
BBC screengrab from within their Russell Brand trial coverage. Image of Brand in 70s-style aviator glasses, with earpods in, blank expression. Long dark wavy hair, black and grey beard, dark unbuttoned shirt. All on a fire red/orange and black background
BBC logo top and centre, underneath a subdeck reading: Fame Under Fire. Then the headline 'Russell Brand On Trial'.
The words 'fire'and 'trial' are coloured to look like they are glowing orange at the bottom

P.S. Not that I'd ever suggest the radioiodine route for Tilly. The quarantine period would be too upsetting for her at her age. Fine for me, but I met younger women who opted for surgery instead as the harm to their toddlers of not having physical contact with Mum for ages was a price too high

Not clever! Took me 2 years to get to that point. The normal test results helped because I remember feeling really angry afterwards, in a "What the hell is wrong with me" fashion, and then it just clicked. The realisation that if I *were* physically ill, then I'd be ill indoors too, which I wasn't.

2/2 But on the upside, Curtis's cousin's exclamations have given us hours of fun and have entered our vocabulary. Chief phrases being for almost ANYTHING that happens in our day: "Who knows!!" and "I wish I damn knew how that story ended!" 😁

I've a birthday coming up and it's been added to the "birthday books I want" list for Mr Shed. We always do this, give each other a list of books to buy, neither of us being "surprise" people. So there's always a pile of physical books plus pinging at midnight from Kindle when the day arrives 😊

Yes, happened to me with agoraphobia I suffered for 2 years (a long time ago now). My panic symptoms made me think I must have a heart problem. All my tests came back normal and I struggled on. It was only when I eventually realised that it only happened when I was out alone that I knew what it was

Having received the HPV vaccine before pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of major pregnancy complications, including preterm birth, with the greater reduction in risk seen among women vaccinated at an earlier age, finds study in The BMJ bit.ly/4yNoTmA
An infographic from The BMJ titled "Quadrivalent HPV vaccination before pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes." It features a summary stating quadrivalent HPV vaccination before pregnancy is associated with lower risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The study design and population details are presented, highlighting 624,713 births in Sweden from 2006 to 2013 and 52,950 HPV vaccinations before pregnancy. A comparison between cases and controls shows matched data. Outcomes, including preterm birth and stillbirth, are displayed with numbers and confidence intervals for both cases and controls, alongside a forest plot. The graphic includes links and copyright information from The BMJ Publishing Group.

Problem is I go into Brighton proper just once a week, taking the bus there. The only exercise I get locally is housework/gardening. Mr Shed has his table tennis - a session locally (plus occasionally at a pal's house), a session at a big club in town, and (new thing!) signing up for tournaments

I think @scarlettmcnally.bsky.social is right in her assessment here. Promoting walking for everyone is a good thing, but is this really the best way to get everyone more active? From the @bmj.com back in the summer, but I’m just catching up now. Link: www.bmj.com/content/394/... #MedSky
Excerpt:

NHS England recently announced plans to launch a new incentive scheme that will reward people who achieve 30 minutes of walking a day, adding up to a “marathon in a month.” I see several weaknesses in this plan.

A quarter of the adult population do less than 30 minutes of exercise in a whole week. This is the group who stand to gain the biggest health improvements from any exercise, but they are unlikely to start doing 30 minutes of walking every day. I worry that the new incentive, and the funding, effort, and media outreach behind it, will attract only the people who are active already, further widening health inequalities.

Evidence suggests that incentive schemes lead to minimal long term behaviour change, so this scheme won’t tackle deep rooted cultural and behavioural determinants of inactivity. There is a science to behaviour change. Capability, opportunity, and motivation are required to change behaviour. A third of adults claim that they don’t have the opportunity to be active because of time constraints, safety concerns, or where they live.

Where we live, a hilly suburb above Brighton proper, the inclines of the streets defeat me now that I'm older. It's also boring seeing nothing but street upon street of bungalows/houses. It's not so bad for me in central Brighton where there are some streets on the level and plenty of life to see
