By me (Prof Scarlett McNally)
Record high waiting lists for organ transplantation require awareness and action [EXTRACTS]
I recently competed in the British Transplant Games in Sheffield.1 More than 1000 transplant recipients and live donors...hundreds of volunteers. I’ve always encouraged exercise as part of health, especially for people with health conditions... I’m also encouraging people to register their decisions on organ donation and sign up to be a stem cell donor.2 3
The event...Children whose organs had been failing were running, laughing, and thriving...
There was a standing ovation as donor families entered for the opening ceremony...powerful stories...people determined to make something positive from the grief of losing a loved one, by allowing organ tissue donation. Living donors now make up 30% of kidney transplants.4
More than 8000 people are now waiting for an organ transplant in the UK, with median waits of one to two years.4 Although all UK nations now have assumed consent,5 fewer organs are made available than are needed.4 Unfortunately...
The UK is falling behind other countries on transplantation, and the number of operations hasn’t increased in three decades.6 A BBC investigation found...insufficient investment, and an exodus of senior transplantation surgeons from the NHS.6 , fragmented systems causing last minute cancellations, and outdated technology that creates challenges in assessing the viability of donated organs.7
Two reports: need for investment in modern technologies, development and retention of a sustainable transplantation workforce and data/coordination across centres.8 9...
My own transplant was an autologous stem cell transplant, that replaced some of my own stem cells after myeloablative chemotherapy for myeloma and cardiac amyloidosis.11 12
