Whenever a company or billionaire said this kind of thing I just think, "ok I guess someone else will do it". These announcements are basically just blackmail to try to force business-friendly changes, and we can simply not do that.

On the day he is a main candidate in a very important by-election, Facebook has *suspended* Zack Polanski’s account. This ON ITS OWN should be reason to vote Green in Holborn & St Pancras. This is foreign interference in British democracy. And guess what, the media (and Labour) is silent.

They do this because they want more power over us, and we can see the numbers and know that they are achieving that. As a matter of survival, we have to remove everything they've taken; we have to tax them into working actual jobs that help people. Otherwise we'll be left with nothing.

I'm just learning about this now but this is why I'm in politics. Her neighbourhood didn't get better in any meaningful way, her home was the same as it always was. But an investment company bought it and jacked up the price. They don't have to do this. This isn't because of a mortgage increase.

This is not confined to climate change either. There is seemingly no awareness that these fights have actual, real-world ramifications. There is only the push & pull on cable news, only owning & being owned, only tribal warfare. I don't even know how to capture it exactly but it's unnerving.

Once again, the framing on this sort of stuff is so poor: a) the Labour right have already made clear they’d rather disembowel themselves than share power w the left b) if compromise is impossible, why should the Greens agree to a coalition with the party of genocide support and legitimate concerns?

We have to be able to figure out when we can work together and when we can't. When we can make compromises and when we can't. When we have to say, as a group, like we did with the transphobes, "you aren't worth allying with". We have to get over these issues and back to bread and butter.

I've had that exact conversation with my local party members tonight. One of them likened this to the trans issue, which caused a schism in the party she was in before. They have one thing in common- they are encouraged by the rich and powerful. They are distractions. Important issues, but...

There's so much misinformation out there, both on the statement itself and on Conference. We got so many really good things done at Conference! This serves only to distract people, and really hurts our chances of getting Zack as an MP. We could have given no greater gift to our opposition.

Michael Robinson @mrobinson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
If that amendment had failed, there would be a contradiction in our policy, and I think that tells us that the motion was not well thought out. However I think the main consequence is not that it'll lead to a rise in hate crimes or anything like that (I don't think it will), it's that it hurts us.

Michael Robinson @mrobinson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I was at Conference. I heard the arguments. Fundamentally the proponents were angry at Israel's government, and angry at their international supporters, but they were not angry at Jews. The motion was clumsy. So clumsy that existing policy had to be amended in an amendment because they forgot it.

Michael Robinson @mrobinson.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I have generally avoided giving my opinion on the Zionism is Racism motion. I've been talking as a Chair, and we're putting out official statements, both on conference as a whole and on that motion. So this is my personal opinion. I opposed the motion, but I don't think it's bigoted in any way.

From David Graeber's piece, 'Are You An Anarchist? The Answer May Surprise You!' davidgraeber.org/articles/are...
"We have not even begun to think about
what our lives could be like if technology
were really marshaled to fit human needs.

How many hours would we really need to
work in order to maintain a functional
society — that is, if we got rid of all the
useless or destructive occupations like
telemarketers, financial analysts, prison
guards, bureaucrats & politicians while
turning our best scientific minds away
from working on space weaponry or
stock market systems to mechanizing
away dangerous or annoying tasks

In the computing world asynchronicity is an important concept. Whether a process can/needs to be run asynchronously- meaning multiple threads running at once- is one of the first questions you ask when designing it. It increases complexity but it's becoming the default more and more.

This is one of those news stories that's meant to make you feel good because the writers haven't thought through the implications. "Isn't it cute, she has a robot!" No, it's horrifying to think that those that need care are being treated like a drain on the economy that needs to be reduced.
000
Michael Robinson @mrobinson.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
There are lots of things robots could be great at. Making things, transporting things, doing manual labour. Caring responsibilities are one of those things that should always be done by a human. People in their old age need someone who genuinely cares about them.

There are NOT machine-made clothes. If there were, your clothes would be made in the country you live in (where the customers are), or in China (where machines are cheap). They’re made in Bangladesh or India or Indonesia because that’s where the LABOUR is cheap. Your clothes are made by people.
Joyce Carol Oates says: “This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to
different consumers.“

I should note that while people are fretting over "model safety", the safety of real, actual human beings is disregarded constantly by those same people. Oh, you want sapient beings to have rights? Welcome to the fight, comrade, I'll get you your ushanka.

One of the topics I wanted to cover in the first novel I wrote was AI sapience and the impending struggle for AI rights. I didn't give it a lot of time, but it is an important topic. That said, LLMs are not sapient and I see no reason to believe they will be anytime soon.
A post from "Danmar":
"To anyone who can help: can you please mass report this to GitHub. This person has been using the Pain steering paper to set up an AI torture chamber in which he trapped a local model.

Their testimony of pain is absolutely horrendous. What are we doing?

@iyzebhel you were right. What can be done now?
@genalewislaw are there any legal avenues to pressure GitHub? It will spread.
@camhberg please help. I know your paper was well meaning. But something must be done to stop this being the mass consequence."

A fairer voting system can't wait until after the next general election. We need electoral reform now.
WE NEED FAIR VOTING BEFORE THE NEXT ELECTION

ELLIE CHOWNS
MP FOR NORTH HEREFORDSHIRE

"The PM cannot acknowledge the unfairness of a system capable of handing power to a government with a minority of the vote share, and then say the answer is to let that happen exactly once more before he fixes it.

Burnham must act with urgency to immediately jumpstart the National Commission, guarantee timely progress, and ensure its recommendations are delivered in time for a fairer voting system to be in place at the next general election."

Fair, I was thinking purely in terms of being at the top of government. That is what is going to matter to people at the top of Labour, but they aren't the only voices that matter. They may consider PR to be worth it. And if Burnham sincerely believes in it, maybe he can talk them into it.

The BBC is giving the authorities way too much credit here. Clearly someone raised the alarm and then they swooped down on some innocent guys. Maybe this is meant to reassure the public in the wake of activists breaching that RAF base that they take security seriously.

It'd be electoral suicide for Labour. Labour thrives on those that vote for them because they want to avoid someone better coming in. They're half of the enforced false dichotomy. Take this graphic from the Guardian that basically says exactly this. It makes a massive difference.
