When I saw the video I wondered if a Schmitt staffer used an AI agent to look for dirt about Smith in this area. Then the agent mixed things up (since AI agents don’t know anything) and spit this Hawks theory out. And then the staffer ran with it rather than checking anything.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

Part of me thinks the Sox should have just said, “Naw, we’re not flying to Florida to play in front of 300 people in a game that means nothing to us and then flying back up to New York for the playoffs. The Cubs can have it.” (I know why they’re not doing this, but still.)

People are getting so mad at these dumb Top 10 lists but I just realized the real, secret way to make people mad would be to list all the shows you haven't seen a single episode of.

I haven’t seen many of these shows, but then I saw they put Watchmen 2 spots behind Battlestar Galactica. BSG is a very good show - arguably an *underrated* show (I really liked the finale!) - but let’s be real here.

33 years ago today, the Stranger stepped onto the dock of Myst Island for the first time. We can still hear the water splashing against the pilings.
The dock of Myst Island from the original version of the game. A wooden dock ends at a spiral staircase that leads up to giant gears on a hillside. A ship is sunk in the water on the right, and parts of buildings are visible on the left.

One important lesson from my career in politics that I want all of you to recognize: There's no secret polling data. The internals usually say the same thing as the public ones. The actual nonpublic data is which campaigns are a mess and which aren't.

Whenever I see a post like this I assume they’ve confused “liberal” (people significantly left of center, e.g. socialists) with “neoliberal” (basically, Reagan/Bush conservatives). Which confusion I assume is why the term ”neoliberal“ exists. I still find it strange when I see it.

my consistent opinion on this is that the left/liberal divide is exaggerated by the most pugnacious voices in each camp, we are all mostly on the same side, and this is especially true right now given our common enemy let’s tone it down until we put them in an electoral dumpster

When I was volunteering at the COVID19 vaccine POD in 2021, people would say over and over again that they were getting vaccinated for the people they love. Last year, only 17.5% of American adults got the COVID19 vaccine. Please get one for the people you love. 💕
