The Red Sox and Cubs played a meaningless game at Tropicana Field on Sunday. They then combined to go 0-4 in the playoffs and were outscored by 27 runs.

Three postgame impressions: * Tracy was as disconsolate as I've ever seen a manager after being eliminated. * Sonny Gray very much disagreed with his quick hook, and several of his teammates agreed. * There was very little "well, we still had a good year." Everybody was pissed off.

Yankees 9, Red Sox 2, final. The season is over. They were outscored by 16 runs in two games. They have not won a playoff series since 2021.

The good news Chapman will be well-rested for his first Grapefruit League game.

The Yankees double-stealing up six in the seventh inning is quite something.

Why is Whitlock still pitching?

Here comes Crochet. This will be interesting. First relief appearance since 2023.

The postseason scoreless streak ends at 26.2 innings as Contreras homers.

2-0 feels like 20-0 the way they're swinging the bat.

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 12h

This is too quick a hook on Sonny Gray.

The Red Sox have gone 24 consecutive innings without scoring in the postseason. They are 12 of 82 (.146) with 27 Ks.

Former Red Sox were 5 of 14 with 5 RBIs for the White Sox when they eliminated the Astros today.

The Yankee Stadium crowd seems more bloodthirsty than last night. Sonny Gray didn't get booed when he pitched here in June, but he sure will tonight.

Roman Anthony just spoke to reporters for 12 minutes. Don't know that I've seen anybody as frustrated about an injury. Said several times how "confused" he was and expressed his frustration with how it all has played out.

9451

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 16h

Curtis Mead replaced Roman Anthony of the roster.

5231

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 17h

Chad Tracy said Anthony has more damage to his wrist than previously. He’ll rejoin the team tonight.

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 18h

Tracy: Anthony off the roster. Sox will replace him. He was actually sent back to Boston last night and examined today.

Red Sox haven't scored in 21 consecutive postseason innings. They are 10x71 (.141) with 24 strikeouts in that stretch.

If Aroldis Chapman pitches tonight (and it's fair to think he will with the season on the line, it would be his first appearance in a week and his second in 17 days.

It was a month shy of 51 years between postseason RBIs for the Yastrzemski family. Good for Mike Yaz. Big day for Massachusetts guys yesterday.

Ben Rice: "I'll remember getting a W versus the Red Sox. There's nothing better than that. I'll remember Cam going out there and just being lights out, like he always is. I'll remember the atmosphere. It was just an awesome night."

Same one he’s had trouble with. They’re evaluating him.

Brayan Bello coming into a 4-0 game in the 8th inning? Tomorrow will be all hands on deck. This seems needless.

Schlittler returns for the 7th at 107 pitches.

omplete dominance for Schlittler. 6 IP 1 H 0 R 1 BB 10 K 107/71 FSG doesn't own the Red Sox. He does.

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

NYY pitching coach Matt Blake came out to see Schlittler and the crowd booed thinking it was Aaron Boone.

Monasterio on deck for Roman Anthony. That can't be good.

5232

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

And it didn't matter. Rice homers to dead center. Massachusetts 2, Red Sox 0.

5243

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Tolle is done after 4 2/3 innings and 83 pitches. They didn't want him facing Ben Rice a third time. So Erik Miller gets him.

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Cam Schlittler owns the Red Sox. That's the story so far. He has retired nine of 10, six by strikeout. He has faced the Sox 6 times in his career (regular season and postseason) and allowed two ER over 35.1 IP with 45 Ks.

This is the first postseason game for Willson Contreras since 2020 with the Cubs.

Sox have won 9 of their last 12 postseason games against the Yankees. They dropped 11 of 15 prior to that.

0250

Peter Abraham @peteabeglobe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Sox finished 12th in the AL in HRs this season. Yankees were 2nd. Teams that outhomered their opponent were 53-13 in the postseason from 2024-25. Sox need to find some power. Can the Anthony-Rutschman-Contreras-Abreu-Rafaela combination provide some pop? That could decide the series.

Red Sox/Yankees winner plays at Tampa Bay on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Game 2 would be Monday at 8 p.m.

Today is only the 13th time the Sox will have Contreras, Rafaela, and Rutschman in the starting lineup at the same time. It's the second time since Aug. 31. They are 7-5 with all three in the lineup.

Obviously, the Yankees would rather have Judge. But they scored 26 runs in a four-game series vs. the Sox at the Stadium in late August without Judge,

Wilyer Abreu finished the regular season with 28 DRS, the most for any player at any position. Ceddanne Rafeala had 21 in CF, just ahead of Andy Pages (20). PCA had 16.
