Possibly my favourite thing about working in schools is sneaking 80s song lyrics into conversations with kids. Finished 5/10 questions? Woah, we're halfway there! Not following the one way system? Turn around bright eyes. #Edusky #TeamCompSci

Lots of behaviour advice is bad. FLMOP isn't. It's a concrete and tangible strategy that any teacher can use to improve behaviour in their classrooms. Read and share 🙏🙏🙏 carouselteachlearnlead.substack.com/p/flmop

Getting better behaviour in the classroom isn’t unattainable. There are simple strategies that really work, and FLMOP is one of the best.

As a teacher, this is entirely unsurprising. If you ask AI to do your homework, it's worse than not doing it. You've learnt nothing, practiced nothing, but come away with such a sense of achievement that you're now even less likely to do any other form of revision.

And now time for that uniquely British summer tradition: where we castigate ourselves, our education system and most of all our young people for going on to be better educated than ever before.

I did maths at school but I must have missed the class where they said a km is 1,000 meters. I thought it was 1024 until I spoke in a seminar at university and felt a shame that's lasted for 31 years so far.

Yes I think this is true and something people outside teaching don't understand well enough. The greatest driver of learning is motivation and humans are not naturally motivated to want to learn stuff. So you need to be inspired to do it. Humans are needed for that.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

When I first started teaching, teachers made their own resources, which gives you a much better understanding of why you're teaching something and where it's leading. Now lots of teachers buy them because we don't even get time to do the actual job properly.

the feeling I'm getting using Claude at work is that if you're a good engineer with deep knowledge of the codebase, it can make you a lot more productive. if you're a mediocre engineer with surface level knowledge of the codebase, it can also make you a lot more productive, which is BAD.
