The heat is coming to BC. An upper ridge will bring 7-10 days of hot dry weather (ECMWF 500 mb height anomaly map below). Forecast for Kamloops below with 6+ days 30C or higher. Fortunately, it does not look like much lightning activity until the ridge breakdown - this is a classic fire situation

Area burned in Canada for 2025 is now at 5.6 M ha exceeding the total for the entire 2024 fire season. This fire season is not as bad as 2023 that had 9.37 M ha burned by July 12, 2023. However, 2025 is a very active year with 365 fires out of control and 2 months still left in the fire season.

With authors from across this globe, we did a few things in this paper worth calling out: 🔥 outline experiments for different fire regions 🔥 include ways to understand impacts of fire on air quality and how smoke can both warm and cool the atmosphere 🔥 highlight transparent ways to do this.

It’s likely going to be an active wildfire season in boreal + Arctic North America *and* Eurasia. Normally one or the other. Both Canada & Siberia have early extreme fires & fire activity. Climate change will make this worse. Be prepared with evacuation plans, air purifiers, masks, & go bags.

Much of the smoke from the Manitoba fires has blown across the Hudson Bay and the North Atlantic towards Europe (mparrington.bsky.social has great shares on this). Folks in Great Lakes region of U.S. & Canada could be impacted if winds change. Wildfire smoke is toxic - please mask, stay indoors.

Minnesota has 3 active wildfires in the northeast region near Lake Superior, with a 🚩 warning ending this evening. The same conditions that lead to spring fires in Canada are at play here in the southern boreal and hemiboreal forests. www.mprnews.org/story/2025/0...

In memory of those who lost their lives 45 yrs ago today including USGS scientist David Johnston who “…gave his life in pursuit of scientific research on behalf of the US Geological Survey”. I often walked by this memorial on the USGS Menlo Park campus and thought of his work at Mt St Helens.

I know lots of awesome women in geospatial so it’s still kind of jarring to me when I see a group photo from an event and it’s 95% men. There’s not a simple solution to making things more balanced but it’s a good reminder for myself to keep amplifying and giving space to other women.
