Current camera & emergency call-in’s by people report 🔥 within 15 mins or less in & near human-dominated landscapes (which the organizers of this XPRIZE admitted). Real talk: Why invest hundreds of millions of dollars to decrease that by 5 mins? (Though in this case, no competitor succeeded).

With CEQA lawsuits curtailed, some cities are expanding fire hazard zones to exempt land from housing laws - San Diego covers 5 times more area than state fire officials recommend. Ironically, blocking safer apartments pushes more building into riskier wildland edges. calhdf.org/is-fire-safe...

Wendell Berry writings hit different when you are from Kentucky. At times his work has been incorrectly affiliated with Appalachia, but much of what he struggled with is cultural inheritance of the Old South. He was from and lived in the Louisville metro, the largest urban region.

Hawk Fire is also another example of a “wildland” fire that is threatening human communities beyond the immediate interface where our settlements meet rural & wild landscape (the WUI - Wildland urban interface). Every home & neighborhood in North America should be assessing fire and smoke risk.

If you're doing it wittingly that's fine no judgement.
A woman walking in the country while looking at her phone. Behind her is a heard of tarantulas. She has no idea. The text reads: Are you unwittingly leading a heard of goats? Put your phone away! Distracted walking sends people to the ER every year. Who knows what kind of power a human being leading tarantulas can amass. We don't even want to think about it.

Pre-modern humans might have processed extreme heat, droughts, wildfires, and an eclipse in one season into apocalyptic tales, omens of impending conflicts, signs of the very planet changing around them. Not sure modern humans are doing much better. Nihil novum sub sole.

Urban firestorms like the one that devastated Spokane Saturday have been growing more common because of increased development in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and climate change. In this post, I document 9 such fires since 2016 in the U.S. yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/08/urba...

As much as this is a water planet, our Earth is also a fire planet. Every continent (except Antarctica) has fire seasons. Climate change and mismanagement have made fire risk and fire danger worse. We can make it better, while still holding onto fire as a needed treatment for the land.

I-95 is closed in coastal Georgia due to a new wildfire in Camden County. It missed the rain today and blew out as multiple outflow boundaries passed through. South Georgia has seen a recent re-emergence of drought indicators due to the hot and dry July.
Wildfire detection from GOES at 8:31 PM EDT Wednesday in southeast Georgia. The fire is occurring along 1-95, shutting it down due to smoke. 30-day standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index over South Georgia and north Florida. Low precip and hot temps have caused dryness to reemerge in areas of longer term drought.
