In my latest for @earthscope.org, I dug into how fiber optic cables can help us better understand flash floods in the SW US. DAS may not be ready for flood early warning, but it can help define thresholds for the switch from infiltration to overland flow. ⚒️🧪 ngf.earthscope.org/news/from-ra...

As a homeowner, my investment in a $30 plumbing auger/snake has once again saved me from an expensive plumber house call. It is messy, frustrating at times, but a good return on investment. Highly recommended if you have the inclination to fight these home repair battles.

Currently practicing for the post-earthquake water outages because the water main on our street broke and we are without water. Imagine this scaled up by multiple orders of magnitude due to an earthquake. Hmmm, when was the last time I changed out our emergency water? Oh no…

Biden checks his watch at a ceremony and Fox does nonstop segments on it for weeks. But Trump falls asleep repeatedly at the 9/11 ceremony and they won’t even show it. But national broadcast news networks won’t show it either because that would be impolite.

Happy California Admission Day! On September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state, just two years after a discovery that changed everything: gold. The rush that followed grew California's population from under 1,000 people to nearly 100,000 in less than two years. 🧪 ⚒️

The nugget has a rough, lumpy surface with bright gold coloring on its upper facets and darker brown oxidized rock or matrix material clinging to its lower portion.Front page of "The Californian" newspaper, published by B.R. Buckelew in San Francisco, dated March 15, 1848. A short item headlined "Gold Mine Found" reports that gold has been found in considerable quantities in the raceway of Captain Sutter's newly built sawmill on the American Fork, noting one person had already gathered thirty dollars' worth in a short time.

NSF is consolidating its geoscience research grants into a new program, GEOcore and reducing annual grants to $110 million total in 200-350 awards. Typical was about $300 million in 1,200 awards. Not including institutional grants ($1.3 billion/yr) and those may be gone. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
