🛰️ Same day but now at sunset over Patagonia, #highlatitudedust activity continued into the night. Note the presence of clouds partially obscure direct view of the dust cloud which make it more difficult for detection algorithms to compute the total extent and how much dust is going into the ocean.

🛰️🔥 Yesterday in the Northern hemisphere, most of the #smoke was being produced by fires in Russia. A lot of smoke in Africa is moving in to the Atlantic O. Note the increasing number of fires in S. America, an area to keep an eye on since this is the time of the year when it is most intense.

Attn @mparrington.bsky.social @aerosolwatch.bsky.social @tomgillpredicts.bsky.social Interesting point in this study. While they do not highlight in conclusions, it is clear in their plots that polarized remote sensing detects dust much better in arid areas than traditional methods.

🧪🛰️ Paper highlights that we are failing to properly monitor pollution in arid areas. Surface networks like Aeronet are used to validate what satellites detect. There are too few of them in arid areas & thus impacting how accurately #dust is detected from space. www.science.org/doi/epdf/10....

🛰️🔥 #wildfires in northern #Canada are producing a lot of #smoke. Notably in this case #winds are carrying the smoke. This is the right setting for intercontinental smoke transport via the #Arctic region. In fact .... 1/2

🧪🛰️ Now continental #smoke and #dust clouds over the western northern hemisphere. There are major impacts in both Europe and N. America: #AirQuality and #PublichHealth Because they block and absorb sunlight so much, it does impact clouds by changing energy distributivo in the atmosphere.

🧪🛰️ Yesterday, #smoke extended through N. America into the Atlantic O. for a distance equivalente to the distance from #Florida to #Alaska
VIRRS satellite image with an overlap of the Aerosol Index product trom the satellite OMPS onboard of the same satellite. Yellow and Red inidcate the presence of light absorbing pollution which in this case is smoke over N America and dust coming of Africa into the Atlantic. 
Note the vertical streaks are artifacts and not a geophysical observation.
