Potato genetics are astonishingly complex, and if you dare let them actually set seed, you have no way of predicting what potatoes you'll get. Could be the best potatoes ever. Could be literal poison. But once you have good spuds, you can keep tubers and they'll regrow reliably.

Curious question: has anyone compiled a decently large sample somewhere of the white supremacist and Nazi imagery used in social media by official Trump administration accounts (esp. official department accounts, rather than individuals)?

I am thinking because 'white house staffers regularly post Nazi-themed propaganda (because they're all little groypers)' is a thing a lot of very online people know, but I might find it useful to be able to point to a collection to prove the point to less online people.

There's just no way to participate in a white Evangelical church without, in some way, becoming party to the youth pastor who marries a girl from the youth group the second she turns 18. Or the kids being drafted as soldiers of God Or the hypersexualization of the teens in the name of Purity

You have to isolate your kids enough that they don't mention things that will get you excommunicated. You have to ensure they know to keep secrets. You *must* use them on the "volunteer" teams and expose them to coercive, violent theology

This. The structure and culture of white evangelical churches are such that even the least abusive adults are going to end up enabling & perpetrating abuse against kids.

There are shitty people in every organization or community but some communities inspire and lead people into rationalizing abuse and others don’t. Like yeah…you are going to find terrible abusive people everywhere but also if you knowingly go the ABUSERS FLOURISH HERE meetings I get to side eye you.

Lots of exvangelicals have major issues of their own but they are also preyed upon by people who keep one foot in and one foot out, people who “hear you” to build their audience but who will run to those same old Christian publishers and Christian magazines to make a living and build their platform.

I just think you can’t see it clearly, not the full picture, if you stay too close in it and don’t step back. If you still use the language and pray the prayers and remain networked you can’t fully see the influences and excuses and the fully entrenched nature of abuse within that community.

dc statehood is non-negotiable after trump's actions in his second term. republicans despise the people of the city that hosts them, and there is little reason to think that, now that the seal is broken on treating them as an occupied population, a next republican president will be more restrained

i feel like, if this is an issue you care strongly about, it's important to get it right, and the screenshot isn't an argument so much as it is an attempt to settle scores, because the actual data on this only leans one way, and it's not in the direction of democrats being centrally responsible

i take issue with the idea that dems play a central role in executions. at the federal level, no dem president has overseen an execution since JFK. at the state level, there are more than i would like, but they’re typically states with purple or red legislatures.
One more thing about the death penalty before going offline. As disgusted as we should be by Trump's bloodlust, we should NOT lose sight of the CENTRAL role of Democrats in upholding, expanding, and enabling this system that seems to horrify so many people right now. It really cannot be said enough

This seems to be a total collapse of ethics review. There is a reason that experienced scientific and medical researchers review studies that involve human subjects. Another safety valve is usually the funding agency, which normally wouldn’t let this through. But, you know…RFK Jr.

Things got more insane just about as soon as I posted this last night. DHS is now arguing that we cannot even put the names of ICE officers in our lawsuit against those officers. Their position is that, if a defendant works for DHS, they cannot be named in a lawsuit. Never seen anything like it.
All this time, while Defendants have refused to identify Does 4 and 5 or respond to Leo’s discovery requests, the six-month statute of limitations on his FTCA claims has nearly expired. So, on October 6, Leo sought Defendants’ consent to file an amended complaint that (1) adds his FTCA claims against the United States and (2) adds the names of Does 1, 2, and 3. These minimal changes are shown in a redline attached to this filing.
Defendants, however, refused to consent to Leo’s amendments because there is not a protective order in place. One of Defendants’ positions with respect to the protective order is that the “full legal names” of all government employees “should be confidential.” (ECF 109, at 2). That position, apparently, means that Defendants even oppose Leo identifying specific officers in his lawsuit against those very officers based on their misconduct in carrying out their public duties. Because Defendants will not consent to Leo’s amendments, Leo has filed this motion for leave.Justice also requires granting Leo leave to name the Doe officers as defendants. Despite DHS’s remarkable position that all government employees’ names are confidential, parties routinely sue government employees by name. In fact, Rule 10(a) “requires a complaint to ‘include the names of all the parties.’” Doe v. Frank, 951 F.2d 320, 322 (11th Cir. 1992) (per curiam) (quoting Fed. R. Civ. P. 10(a)). “Lawsuits are public events.” Id. Rule 10(a) “protects the public’s legitimate interest in knowing all of the facts involved, including the identity of the parties.” Id. Only in an “exceptional case” can a party’s name be withheld from the public. Id. And that bar is even higher for public employees since their employment “diminishes their privacy interests” given “the corresponding public interest in knowing how public employees are performing their jobs.” Stern v. FBI, 737 F.2d 84, 92 (D.C. Cir. 1984);

The thing about Cottagecore is that is a fetishized aesthetic of country ife, divorced from labor and idealized by a primarily urban audience with a backward looking ethos of tradition. They are not prepared for the stresses of a rural life: farming; harvesting; tapping pumpkins to ensure none of them have been replaced with flesh; losing out or ncome by having to use one of your pigs in a blood sacrifice to paint protective sigils over your doors and windows; checking cracks and chimneys for the flesh-vines of the Pumpkin Lord; having to decide pefore the Growth is complete, whether that's really your tradwife o an amassment of vines, leaves, and blood in the shape of your tradwife; ignoring their desperate pleas that "I'm me! No! No!" as you ourn them alive, realizing too late you picked wrong; and the exploitative corporate nature of commercial farming in 2024. All seen through a deeply colonial lens, of course

Virtue signaling of "rainbow capitalism" gave me hope as a Evangelical homeschooled kid who was hiding from myself that I was bi and trans. There are probably always going to be kids like me, and this broader societal virtue signal can be the difference between life and death for us.

This is just like the "Philip Glass: Plumber" story!
This sometimes led to strange encounters. Glass shared this story in a 2001 interview:

"I had gone to install a dishwasher in a loft in SoHo. While working, I suddenly heard a noise and looked up to find Robert Hughes, the art critic of Time magazine, staring at me in disbelief. 'But you're Philip Glass! What are you doing here?' It was obvious that I was installing his dishwasher and I told him I would soon be finished. 'But you are an artist,' he protested. I explained that I was an artist but that I was sometimes a plumber as well and that he should go away and let me finish."

Glass made creative use of these experiences too. When he later took a job as studio assistant to abstract sculptor Richard Serra, Glass convinced the artist to start using lead for his works.
