This ancient Greek figure from the 2,500 year-old Douris Cup looks uncannily like someone working on a laptop! 😲 💻 He’s actually writing with a stylus on a hinged wax writing tablet! The technology has changed, the posture has not! 😂 Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me
My photo shows detail from an ancient Greek red-figure kylix (drinking cup) of a young man shown in profile seated on a stool facing right. He wears a knee length cloak (himation) over his left shoulder, which is shown in folds around his waist and upper legs. His right shoulder, chest, and arms are bare. His dark hair is short, and he wears a band around his head. He is looking down at an open rectangular wax writing tablet which he is supporting in his left hand above his lap. In his right hand he holds a metal stylus pen poised over the writing tablet. The wooden writing tablet is hinged like a book and, from this angle, resembles a modern laptop. The figure is part of a scene depicting school lessons in ancient Athens, painted by Douris around 480 BC. On display at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

A winged, large dragon sits quietly reading in his wingback chair, while his friend an orange cat sits atop the chair, enjoying the peacefulness; a roaring fire & candles surround him, as well as his teapot & tea, stacks of candles & his bookshelves. “Dame de Brassempouy” Approx 28,000 BC.

Ivory of mammoth
Grotte du Pape, (Brassempouy, Landes)

The “Lady with the Hood” or “Dame de Brassempouy” is the most famous and most moving of prehistoric works of art, as she brings us the most real and lifelike image of Palaeolithic woman.

The techniques used to make this statuette are very complex and achieve great visual qualities: incisions for the chequerboard pattern and the facial features, perforation for the pupil of the eyes, scraping and polishing to model the face.

This “first human face”, sculpted from the ivory core of a mammoth tusk, is very striking. It is sub-triangular in shape and well balanced. The forehead, eyebrows, nose and chin are in relief. The only visible part of the eyes is the pupil, particularly the one on the right.

Wonderful ancient artistry! Some 3,400 years ago, an Egyptian artisan captured a sense of speed and elegance in this beautifully carved whip handle in the shape of a horse! New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep III, c. 1390–1352 BC. The Met 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ivory handle of a light whip or fly whisk carved in the shape of a horse. The ivory body of the horse is stained reddish-brown, and the mane and tail are black. The horse is seen in profile facing left. Its legs are outstretched in front and at the back in a ‘flying gallop’ position, with a gracefully arched back. The eyes are inlaid with garnet, one of which is missing (not seen in my photo). Xochipilli, the “Flower Prince,” was the god of flowers and patron of music, song, dance, and gambling. Under his other name, Macuilxochitl, he was also the patron deity of the ballgame, in which betting was a common practice. The god figure is seated with his legs drawn towards him and his arms resting across his knees. He wears a loincloth and sandals, and his head is adorned with the feather crest of the tropical quetzal bird, whose song is the first to be heard at dawn.

Jar lid decorated with a little bird just hatched from one of the eggs. Egyptian alabaster, wood, and ivory. Found in 1922 in the tomb of Tutankhamun, 18th Dynasty, c. 1336-1327 BC. Grand Egyptian Museum, Cairo 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows an ivory-coloured Egyptian alabaster stone lid from an unguent jar. The main part of the lid is a flat saucer topped by a deeper bowl. The bowl (nest) contains a small brown hatchling bird. Carved from wood, it has a long neck, an open beak revealing an ivory tongue, and out-stretched wings. The hatchling is painted light brown with tiny black dots over the body representing the places where its feathers will grow. (The dots don’t show in my photo). It sits amongst four alabaster eggs. The bird is carved from wood. Lid width 13.4 cm.

Found by Howard Carter in the Annex of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.

I want you all to appreciate this Attic kylix from the 470s BC depicting the scene where Jason is supposed to be killing the Colchian dragon that guards the Golden Fleece. Except for some reason, it’s either swallowing or barfing him while Athena checks in.
Image from the interior of an Attic red-figure kylix depicting the naked body of Jason, helpfully labeled, hanging out of the dragon’s mouth. The Golden Fleece is draped over a tree in the background. Helmeted Athena stands in front of the dragon, a spear in one hand and an owl in the other.
