In case you missed it earlier, I've got a new book out! Sort of! It was new four months ago! It is perfectly normal not to know that you've got a book out until four months later!

Just finished Angélica Gorodischer's tremendous fantasy Kalpa Imperial. Easily the equal of Le Guin's work (Le Guin translated this book!) or Calvino's Invisible Cities or Stanislaw Lem, as incisive and imaginative and funny and caring as stories can be, and so touching I cried at the end.

A not-insubstantial part of why the games industry has *remained* in crisis mode since ~2023 is that all the investment has been siphoned off into chips and data centers that have almost zero chance of making back their money. But that doesn't matter, since someone still gets paid.

Given the repression that is being inflicted in climate protestors, it is up to everyone to support people and organisations that are making a difference. The government has to know that the majority wants a future, and break this fantasy that there is a consensus around right wing bullshit.

Game design isn’t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing. I think to a lot of folks outside dev, game criticism (an art in itself) is seen as interchangeable with design.

I’ve never seen this Harryhausen quote about why stop motion animation is its own aesthetic form & trying to make it feel like smooth live-action is a category error. ❤️
As Harryhausen summed it up in 1981:

To me, the ultimate aim in making our films has never been the smoothing out of stop-motion animation. To try to duplicate live action in every way seems to me like asking a painter to paint a landscape so it will appear like a photograph. Our pictures are more of a surrealistic experience rather than an excursion into technical perfection. I’m certain technical perfection has its place and its advantages, but could you really make a sequence such as the skeleton swordfight in Jason and the Argonauts … with a computer?
