I DID IT! Even with strep, I finished the first draft of my PhD after *eighteen years*. It is very drafty, and gets considerably worse near the end as my body temperature rose beyond its healthy limit, but I gosh darn DID IT. Now I have 3 full months to revise it before the deadline. Phew.

"[While] the cognitive revolution seemed to be a radical breakaway from behaviorism (...) several similarities between behaviorism and CogSci [remain] today such as the hope for a reductionist account of the mind, and a neglect of the use of phenomenological introspection." -- Pléh & Gurova (2013)
EXISTING AND WOULD-BE ACCOUNTS OF
THE HISTORY OF COGNITIVE SCIENCE: AN
INTRODUCTION1
Csaba Pléh and Lilia Gurova
Science [...] is the source of a deep tension in the modern world. On the one hand, we have
been formed by the traditions of our culture. [...] On the other hand, modern empirical
sciences have reshaped our world and the way this whole world is interpreted. (Hans-
Georg Gadamer 1983: 209)
In this introductory chapter, the authors have three aims:
1) To summarize the accepted vision of the history of cognitive science, and somehow
characterize the different weights put on different historical and substantial parts of the
story, according to the sometimes diverging constituting disciplines.
2) To show that in (especially continental) European philosophy and psychology, there is
an alternative prehistory of cognitive science, along the lines introduced by Brook (this
volume).
3) Finally to indicate how some of the recent developments can be seen as replies to the
traditional challenges regarding the supposedly reductionist theories of the mind.

I'm taking my "Norway's wealth tax didn't reduce tax revenue" victory lap.
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021–2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an “exodus” of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times, 2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners’ firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners’ savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms. Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms, nor is there any evidence that the reform induced more bankruptcies. ...

WASHINGTON - Yesterday, the U.S.
Department of War announced that the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the man convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, would be publicly livestreamed. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following statement sharply condemning the decision of the U.S. government:
"It is with shock and great sorrow that I have learned of the Department of War's decision to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan. Our God is the God of life. In no way can Hassan's actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The word of God exhorts us: 'do not repay anyone evil for evil' (Romans 12:17). The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people.United States
