Second call - CFP: Canadian Science Fiction: Northern Speculations in the Canadian Context This will be a part of McFarland’s Critical Explorations in Science Fiction series and will be edited by Gillian I. Leitch (independent scholar) and Caroline-Isabelle Caron (Queen’s University).
Second call - CFP: Canadian Science Fiction: Northern Speculations in the Canadian Context
21st-century Canadian science fiction is unique and varied. Its production is a reflection of the country’s size, history, its status as a former colony of both Great Britain and France, its vast geography and its close proximity to the United States, as a country of immigrants and a colonizer in its own right over its Indigenous Peoples.
The Canadian imagination expresses itself in English, French, Indigenous languages and the languages of its immigrant groups, and speaks to a multicultural environment. The Canadian landscape, so vast and varied, inspires the writers, and has been re-imagined as alien worlds and foreign cities.
This is a second call for proposals. The editors seek contributions which present an overview of current Canadian science fiction in all media. The volume’s objective is to create a comparative overview demonstrating the variety and depth of the Canadian science fictional imagination. The editors aim to include sections on narrative fiction, television and cinema, and gaming. This will be a part of McFarland’s Critical Explorations in Science Fiction series and will be edited by Gillian I. Leitch (independent scholar) and Caroline-Isabelle Caron (Queen’s University).

We are currently seeking articles on:
    • Afro-futurisms including by Nalo Hopkinson
    • Specific authors, including authors of colour such as Fonda Lee, Premee Mohamed, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, for example
    • An overview of Anglophone SF literature
    • Specific linguistic communities and science fiction
    • Regions or rurality in science fiction
    • Science fiction production in Canada
    • Canadian futures

If you are interested in contributing to this book, please submit a proposal of 250 words along with a short biography to: gilliandoctor@gmail.com

It's going to be quite a visual to publicly execute a man in a wheelchair by firing squad.
Only 2 countries held known public executions last year. The U.S. is preparing for its first in 90 years.

When Nidal Hasan is put to death by firing squad during a public livestream, he will become the first person to be publicly executed in the United States in nearly a century.

The Defense Department announced Thursday the execution of Hasan, the ex-Army major who was convicted in the 2009 killings of 13 people at Fort Hood, will be livestreamed on Dec. 3. Hasan is paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair after being shot in the back by police who responded to the mass shooting.

like this is unconscionable
Tanya was completely blindsided by this. She was told that she was coming into a meeting to discuss the past season and the next season. She walks in; she sits down. And Tom starts the meeting with, the nature of this meeting has changed. We’re letting you go. And told her she was fired and had to get out of her office by 5 o’clock.

Can I give you a little bit of background? The Simon family is legendary at CBS News. Her father was a famous Vietnam correspondent and then Bob Simon covered every single war, everywhere in the world throughout his entire career. I was with him in Kuwait during the Gulf War in 1990. We would stand on the roof of the hotel and watch the missiles come in. He taught me how to be a war correspondent. And then Tanya Simon comes in. She’s at the broadcast 30 years. There is no respect for that. Get out of the office by five o’clock? What company in the world treats their precious people that way? [Tears up] Tanya Simon spent her whole childhood waiting for the call that her father was dead, never knowing if she would ever see him again. Her whole childhood. Get out by 5 o’clock. Make of that what you will.

There is something truly obscene about a British-German project to use Namibian wind/solar resources to produce hydrogen/ammonia for export to make Germany energy independent, dredging up the site of the Herero and Nama genocide. Also illustrative of why colonialism always matters as analysis.
Many descendants also fear that the Hyphen project could undermine efforts to preserve Namibia’s sites of the genocide as places of remembrance. Sima Luipert, adviser to the Nama Traditional Leaders Association (NTLA) and a collaborator on the exhibition, fears the port expansion could disturb burial grounds. “When they dredge, they don’t seem to realise that they are not simply moving dirt. They are disturbing the dead,” she says. “The water is the burial site.”
