There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Great column. It really is the most transparent level of gov't (police notwithstanding). Things are tight. I often get comments like "city hall is corrupt" - well, show me where? It has the most openness, the most public eyes on it. Other levels, far less transparency (looking at you, Ontario)

The corollary to this is that progressive urbanism must also be at least a little bit libertarian to be liberatory; to get organic, informal networks you need to allow the uncontrolled and unpredictable, whether that's different and novel housing or jobs or amusement.

I met a resident who lives across the street from the Parkside camera (RIP) & saw it happen multiple times. Saw the people & vehicles used. Had recordings. They didn't say anything to police because they "didn't want to be a narc" 🫠 There are def doorbell cameras that had plenty of evidence.

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

@alexbozikovic.bsky.social has written what is now my favourite succinct analysis of why Alto is such a vital national project.
The value of cities is not merely that they concentrate people and transactions. It is that they create a shared
world: places where strangers encounter one another, where ideas circulate, and where commerce emerges from proximity and
exchange. Even now, the economic power of cities is inseparable from their social and cultural life. Yet this is poorly understood by many
governments. Alto promises to remedy that, while
protecting Canada against a future in which high oil
prices and climate politics make roads and airports much less accessible. If done right - with well-located downtown terminal stations
- Alto would remake the cultural and economic
geography of Canada.
