You shouldn't feel smugly superior to the Americans if your countrymen and women are going to make the same mistake. Look at the opinion polls in your own country, and spend your energy trying to avert the looming disaster threatening it instead of just posting that Americans are the enemy.

The Americans are not the only one who make costly mistakes in voting for demagogues. Ultimately, no one suffers more from Trump being in power than the Americans; and no one will suffer more from whichever populist your compatriots will vote for than your own country.

More extreme opinions get more engagement, which is rewarded. Second thing is: don't think you are better than the Americans just because your country isn't led by Trump. Are you really sure that a Trump-like person has no chance of winning in your country? Look at Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state.

I remember the comments people would have about Hungarians back when Orban was in power. "Kick these parasites out of the EU!" Those comments disappeared after Magyar's victory. Suddenly, Hungarians were in good standing again. So, first, social networks have a deleterious effect on discourse.

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
Axios: AI has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.

Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane — makes it easy to lose the thread. AI can help you pick it back up without starting over.
📖 I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

"I'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

The US Army realised in 1941, as it spooled up for war, that it needed around 500,000 typewriters to function. so great was the need that they had to requisition and ration them. HALF A MILLION. Equivalent to 40% of the entire US domestic supply at the time. Logtics wins wars.

Maybe the better word than competent is effectual - we've had other recent PMs who have managed to do extremely bad things, and some PMs who have been ineffectual but largely for outside reasons (Sunak maybe), but Starmer has 400 seats and can't manage to do anything effectually or coherently.

The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you're someone. You hear them shouting 'Heil, Spode!' and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer.
What the Voice of the People is saying is: 'Look at that frightful ass Spode swanking about in footer bags! Did you ever in your puff see such a perfect perisher?

I think, genuinely, Starmer does just believe that the “wrong outcome” must mean “the wrong process was followed”, and therefore Robbins needed to be sacked. It wasn’t a “cynical but dumb” move, it was a “this worldview is highly unsuited to running a government” move.
