This is a beautiful example of a pair of late 16th — early 17th-century chopines. A chopine is a women’s platform-style shoe that was popular in Europe, especially in Venice and Spain, from the 15th to 17th centuries.

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

3 Sept. 1656 #OTD Alice Thornton's daughter Elizabeth (Betty) died aged 18 months and was buried at St Anne's, Catterick. The parish register records her burial, leaving out her name, which was perhaps meant to be added later: ' ___ the daughter of Wm Thornton buried the 3rd of Sept'. #EarlyModern 🗃️

The ruins of Godstow Abbey, Oxford, in the twilight. A 2019 study by historian Katie Ann-Marie Bugyis ascertained that for local benefactors, the prayers of the Godstow Benedictine nuns held equal value compared to that of the nearby male communities, and that in some cases, they were valued more.

I love this photo of Saint Luke with piles of manuscripts in his lap from the Gospel Book of Otto III (c. 1000 CE) (Manuscript (Clm. 4453), Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich). Probably projection, but he looks traumatized by all the reading he still needs to do before the end of the semester.

This is another miniature from the Gospels of Otto III (folio 139r). It shows St Luke with a piles of manuscripts in his lap (their bindings studded with jewels) exalting all the Old Testament prophets who foretold the coming of Christ.

10 April 1678 #OTD Alice Thornton brought a case at the quarter sessions in Thirsk against her former servant, John Calvert, for stealing sheep. In late 1677 Thornton had owned 32 ‘fat’ sheep (i.e., ready for slaughter) but they all mysteriously disappeared from the meadow near her house. 🗃️ 📜
