King Henry: I thought we'd have a HOLY war now? #ProdigalPrince #SlowShakespeare www.english.cam.ac.uk/research/slo... Jasper Britton as Henry in the opening scene of 1 Henry IV @the-rsc.bsky.social 2014, its design (des. Stephen Brimson Lewis) emphasising the religious context & language here.
A photograph of a play in performance. A king wearing a crown stands centre stage; it's dimly lit, with an enormous projection of a stained glass rose window on the floor, sanctuary lamps and a big crucifix hanging above, and a prayer desk in the foreground. There are monks with lighted candles standing in the background.

I now live near Ely, so have to contend with insults from Nashe while I re-read his praise of Great Yarmouth in Lenten Stuffe this afternoon
"A towne it [Great Yarmouth] is that in rich situation exceedeth many citties, and without the which, Caput gentis, the swelling Battlementes of Gurguntus, a head citty of Norffolke, and Suffolke, would scarce retaine the name of a Citty, but become as ruinous and desolate as Thetforde or Ely"

Stephen Watkins reviews Shakespeare’s Globe’s 2025 production of Troilus and Cressida, directed by Owen Horsley 🎭: www.shakespearesglobe.com/whats-on/tro... 📰: muse.jhu.edu/article/998132 📷: Helen Murray
At the center is an actor with long blonde curly hair, a gold sequined top, a short pink skirt, and black combat boots. They are pouring an open bottle over their head with their mouth open as a clear liquid spills over them. They are surrounded by a group of actors, all of whom appear to be jeering or screaming, with their mouths open and leaning into one another. Below the image is the text “This was a Troy in which characters shamelessly paused the action to take selfies for their social media platforms, while violent battles became televised sporting spectacles for mass consumption. At its core, this production was an irreverent and cynical comment on the contemporary obsession with manufacturing personal "brands," and with how these can end up departing from, and ultimately corrupting, lived realities.”. The image and the text are over an orange background with the SB logo.

‘Silent Histories: Deafness in Early Modern England’

1 October 2026, in-person and online
Society, Culture and Belief, 1500-1800, at the Institute of Historical Research, London

Rosamund Oates shares previously untold stories of deaf men, women and children, showing how their experiences reveal contemporary beliefs about disability and humanity in early modern England. Drawing on archival sources, she will explore how far deaf people were integrated into their communities, and show how Catholic and Protestant churches adapted to include sign language users from the medieval period onwards. Lastly, she will explore the influence that deaf signers had on the broader culture of the period, showing their impact on artists, scientists and philosophers, including Christopher Wren and John Locke.

Venue and booking details will be available soon on our webpage:
