Oct 2-7 1939: In a direct reaction to the bitter 1934 Teamsters strikes, Minneapolis business leaders hold "Century" celebrations, jumping the gun on the city's actual centennial by 15 years. Civic organizers used the success of this event as a blueprint to launch the Aquatennial the next summer.
Nicollet Avenue in downtown minneapolis dressed in patriotic bunting, signs read "Minneapolis Century" and "World Center of Flour Milling", even though the city had fallen from the world leader 9 years earlier. The parades and street closures were intentionally anti-labor

Since we're doing this today, I'll tell my 9/11 story. It happened about two months after, when I was living just outside of NYC. I was taking the commuter rail into Manhattan. The train was packed and I got stuck in the semi-sheltered limbo between the cars with a bunch of strange dudes.
