Stranded in Iceland in a surprise emergency stopover. Scroll to the top and enjoy this vicarious travel nightmare saga from the safety of your couch. British Airways does not come out of this tale of chaotic crisis management, terrible coms and snooty service at all well.

This made me smile, attached to an ordinary cast iron drainpipe on a house in Durham. #TinyJoys
A cast iron drain pipe going down the side of a white-painted house. A crest of red feathers and a bright orange beak made from something solid have been attached around it. It looks remarkably like "Feathers McGraw", the evil criminal penguin from The Wrong Trousers.

I went for a wander round the 4 acre garden and found a box of VHS tapes marked ‘For the next one’. I’m sure it’s fine. I’m sure it’s all fine

I love re-upping this: for decades the main library at UCLA had the generic name University Research Library because the person most responsible for getting it built was an English professor named Hugh G. Dick and the university refused to name it after him.

People have really not grasped how laughable & outrageous the two announced Cambridge 'investigations' are. One is extremely narrow--what support measures were available to Jason Arday (hint: they'll find all boxes were ticked). Second is so broad as to be meaningless: how senior hires are made. 1/n

Also, some cohorts are smarter than others. Some years, the ambient level of intellect, engagement and effort is just higher. Those students shouldn’t be penalised by sharing out the same ration of A grades as the more plodding cohorts. Who they will then compete against for jobs/grad scholarships.

Love this! This is not my research ‘community of practice’ (I’m mid century film socs and cinephilia) but the questions and mapping process is the same. What survives—paper docs, media recordings, interviewees who remember—will differ, but if you can map it closer to the moment, do.

Superbad was always a surprisingly dark, bleak little film. And farsighted in sinister ways. I mean, we all know McLovin’ is in ICE now. Hill’s ever more disappointing real life trajectory feels very true to its anxious misogynistic spirit.

Every accusation is a confession. As a former theater operator, I can tell you from experience that the current right-wing conspiracy theory about The Odyssey’s ticket sales has currency because this is, in fact, how small ideologue studios juice their own numbers to make their sales seem strong.

I will never get used to the peculiar way in which Americans use the terms ‘seasoning’ (pretty much any added flavour, apparently) and ‘spicy’ (any food with a bit of heat to it, even mustard and horseradish, but also—weirdly—any pet or human that is not obsequiously compliant).

Gender politics-wise, it feels very current. It also has some very ahead of its time narratively central product placement and a really interesting casting of a black actor in a not terrible bit part as one of the other drivers in an extended race/chase.
