Today would have been the 80th birthday of the Third Programme - BBC Radio 3’s remarkable predecessor. My latest for the BBC marks the occasion with a dip into the programme archives, unearthing some forgotten gems from the Third’s early years…

Oh no. That kind of thing does not belong in a Billy Wilder movie. Ace in the Hole is the full 20 minutes, and its fans like it that way.

Stranded in Iceland in a surprise emergency stopover. Scroll to the top and enjoy this vicarious travel nightmare saga from the safety of your couch. British Airways does not come out of this tale of chaotic crisis management, terrible coms and snooty service at all well.

Also cheese. I don’t know who first thought ‘Perhaps this cave could have a better use than being a dark damp dwelling. Perhaps it can help turn this old milk into tasty lumps of solid joy’. But it was probably a woman.

Love it! Wooden builds are less common in mainland UK, but due to the Scandinavian influence, they’ve become quite popular in the Northern Isles. We do paint rendered stone/brick houses in bright colours in a lot of seaside towns though.

1970s construction is often pretty great in the UK. It’s after the advent of building regulations but before the arrival of Thatcherism. Textured wallpaper choices and artex paint got everywhere though.

Does that mean it’s one of those early 20th C American wooden bungalows, and you get to paint the outside a fun colour too?

But in every US AirBnB I am still freaked out and a little horrified by the phenomenon of the American ‘comforter’. Why isn’t it a proper duvet? Why doesn’t it have a natural fibre slip cover I can wash at 60 (140 in your money).

We had a few different trends going on, on shiny and sateen, one more earthy and scratchy. Both were A LOT. So much too much we were punished with two decades of ‘tasteful’ neutrals.

We didn’t get the so much of white wicker in the UK, but Mediterranean colours up the wazoo. So much terracotta red and turmeric/mustard yellow. Any wicker or bamboo tended to be natural.

Home decor in the 90s was basically feral. I blame 1980s faux marble rag rolling closely followed by 1990s home makeover reality TV shows.

It resists RomCom while teasing it. No one pretends to be anyone else—the Potters, who are casting RomCom gold, loudly protest that they are not the Porters. Ultimately it is hard to build a really fluffy comedy around a dead mother.

This is why i have to admit that my beloved Holiday fails to fully push all the RomCom buttons. There is much silliness but the central premise is not utterly absurd.

This made me smile, attached to an ordinary cast iron drainpipe on a house in Durham. #TinyJoys
A cast iron drain pipe going down the side of a white-painted house. A crest of red feathers and a bright orange beak made from something solid have been attached around it. It looks remarkably like "Feathers McGraw", the evil criminal penguin from The Wrong Trousers.

The very talented and now much awarded Daniel Radcliffe had already played David Copperfield in a major BBC adaptation and been in a John Boorman pic before HP. And his mum was a casting director. Sure, doing HP cushioned his bank account. But it also probably slowed his path to a serious career.

I love re-upping this: for decades the main library at UCLA had the generic name University Research Library because the person most responsible for getting it built was an English professor named Hugh G. Dick and the university refused to name it after him.

Jack Pullman’s previous big BBC adaptation was War and Peace. The outdoor filmed sequences with loads of extras and military kit clearly cost a packet, but added absolutely nothing aesthetically or narratively. The constraints of a smaller budget for I, Claudius were a blessing.

People have really not grasped how laughable & outrageous the two announced Cambridge 'investigations' are. One is extremely narrow--what support measures were available to Jason Arday (hint: they'll find all boxes were ticked). Second is so broad as to be meaningless: how senior hires are made. 1/n

I would love to have a cat again, but I can’t provide outdoor access, so I don’t. Because it would be sub-optimal for the cat and very selfish.

Mel Selfe @melselfe.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Part of the problem is the Americanisation of the discourse online, which leads people to justify weird catnapping behaviour. In the ideal UK scenario the cat has a catflap and comes and goes as it pleases, and the neighbours are not dicks.

This is a UK publication. Best practice in the UK (where there are no coyotes) is to provide outside access (away from busy roads). If you can’t do so, you are unlikely to be considered a suitable adopter for most cats by any of the major charities. Just check a few posts. www.cats.org.uk/glasgow
