Big news: The family of Tierra Walker, who died after she couldn't get an abortion, is suing a slate of Texas actors in state court, including AG Ken Paxton. They say the state ban is unconstitutional. This is the first suit of its kind. 19thnews.org/2026/09/texa...

Tierra Walker died after she couldn’t get an abortion. Her family is suing Ken Paxton
The case, filed Tuesday, argues that Texas’ near-total abortion ban violates the state and U.S. Constitutions, which “prohibit state actors from killing their citizens.”

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

Texas legislators just passed a bill that gives politically-appointed regents control over faculty curriculum, hiring, & governance. It does what they accuse academics of doing: privileging ideas, biases, & agendas on political grounds, & silencing those that do not follow their ideology.
texastribune.org
Political appointees would have more control over Texas universities’ courses and hiring under bill OK’d by House
Senate Bill 37 would give more power to university regents, who are appointed by the governor, to vet and veto new curricula and administrators.

International Women's Day has become a day I approach trepidation--waiting to see Ipsos's annual poll. This year's results don't curb my anxieties. 53% of men globally (47% of US men) agree that efforts toward gender equality have gone so far they're hurting men. And young men agree most of all.🧵1/
Below is a list of statements. For each,
please indicate whether you strongly
disagree, somewhat disagree,
somewhat agree, or strongly agree.
We have gone so far in promoting
women's equality that we are
discriminating against men.

Across a 30-country average, people are
divided on whether we have gone so far in
promoting women’s equality that we are
discriminating against men (44% agree vs.
49% disagree).
Over half of men (53%) agreed with this
statement compared to 35% of women.

When it comes to giving women equal
rights with men, things have gone far

Across age groups, men are more likely than
women to agree that when it comes to giving
