A reminder that voting in America is not a car that takes you to you final destination, it is a bus that takes you closer to where you want to go. James Talarico might be trying to throw trans kids under the bus, but Ken Paxton is driving it, stopping, and backing up over the kids. Twice.

A tweet from Michael Harriot: Here's a wonderful thing I noticed. If you talk to someone who was in choir or band at a majority Black HS, you'll eventually discuss those annoying fundraisers for uniforms, instruments, etc. A suprising number will say: "Oh, Dolly Parton paid for ours."

21 Grahams

From descriptions of Donald Trump, stated between 2015 and 2018, by Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator from South Carolina.

A race-baiting, xenophobic bigot
The Islamic State’s “man of the year”
The death of the GOP’s relationship with Hispanic voters
A death blow to the GOP’s relationship with women
The world’s biggest jackass
A wrecking ball
A salesman of fear
A politician whose ideas are gibberish
A politician who is incapable of representing a mattress company
A poor representation of a Republican
A president who is unfit for office
A president who sometimes crosses the line
A Twitter user whose tweets are sometimes beneath the office of the presidency
A man who has a blind spot
A thoughtful person
A good person
A strong person
A golfer with an accurate drive and an athletic swing
A president doing a great job
The best hope in decades for peace
A potential recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize

Let me say that again. When the researchers gave everyone the same amount of money, 100% of the most talented people in the simulation had an impact. When they gave the money only to the “deserving,” most talent went nowhere.

This is UBI. This is exactly UBI. The paper is essentially a mathematical proof that a world with universal basic income is more meritocratic than a world without one, because luck-based distribution — which is what we have now — throws away most of the talent in the room. A UBI world isn't a world that rewards laziness. It's a world where the Einsteins and the Khns and the Kleks and the creatives you've never heard of yet actually get a shot at mastery that their talent deserves, instead of getting filtered out at age 19 because they couldn't afford rent.

A few have suggested that some aspects of this mission--joy, international teamwork, diversity--are being played up to stick it to the hateful attitude of the administration. But I don't think it's that. I think it's just that those things are essential to and inseparable from a mission like this.

essentially the entire problem with doctoring is that two totally different professions— medicine and care— have been combined into one, and people who want to do medicine broadly resent the expectation to perform care, to disastrous results.

if some random person at a public meeting has a bad take, refocusing on them probably just takes you further off topic. it's okay to just say "I don't think that's a useful way to think about this. The way I see it, [ good frame ]"

Friends, today is the feast day of St. Frances Cabrini - the first US citizen to be canonized, and the patron saint of immigrants. She's a saint worth noting, regardless of one's religious persuasion, but her life and work - and its implications for today - hit differently in these troubled times.

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders? Almost all (60 to 90%) of mergers destroy shareholder value (i.e. the owners would be better off if they didn't merge). BUUUT in the short run, you can make it look good enough for all your executives to get their next gig lined up.

In retrospect, King of the Hill figured out the messaging we should have used with climate change.
Two panel King of the Hill meme.

Top Panel: Hank Hill on a lawn mower. “It’s already 110 in the summer.”

Bottom panel: Hank angrily pointing at Dale. “And if it gets one degree hotter, I’m gonna kick your ass.”

"Your life should not be a museum." "Being alive is as special an occasion as it gets."
An image of three screenshotted tweets. The original from user @hell_doe: "Thinking about the girl who bought me coffee from Texas and joked that I would have to ration it out for special occasions. My friend, I do not save my good things. Being alive is as special an occasion as it gets."

User Mike Hamilton, RIV tweeted a screenshot of the original tweet to say: "being alive is as special an occasion as it gets" fundamentally altered my brain."

User Oliver Darkshire quote tweeted Hamilton to say, "Ten years as an antiquarian, hearing nothing but "my relative kept these untouched in a box their whole life but they died and I don't want this stuff" has radicalized me. annotate the books. use the china. wear the clothes until they wear out. your life should not be a museum."

Caesar’s last words being a curse rather than an expression of betrayal would be so on brand
with his toga and let himself fall.' Suetonius adds that, according to some reports, he said in Greek: 'Kai su, teknon' (which Shakespeare turned into the Latin 'Et tu, Brute?'). It literally means 'You too, child,' but what Caesar may have intended by the words isn't clear. Tempest cites 'an important article' by James Russell (1980) 'that has often been overlooked'. Russell points out that the words kai su often appear on curse tablets, and suggests that Caesar's putative last words were not 'the emotional parting declaration of a betrayed man to one he had treated like a son' but more, along the lines of 'See you in hell, punk.
