I could count the other masked folks that I saw at #AAPM2025 on one hand, but there is a mountain of evidence that covid causes long-term issues, one of them being that it is oncogenic. I'm not sure why medical physicists aren't protecting themselves. 😷

A thread to highlight some sessions and posters at #AAPM2025 that include members of the Accessibility Subcommittee! (Not necessarily about ASC-related topics, just our work) First up, Natalie Viscariello will give a talk entitled Creating Safe Space for Everyone: for All Levels of Ability.
The session is called: across the rainbow, creating safe space for everyone

Monday, July 28th, 2025, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in room 201 of the Walter E Washington convention Center

Description: medical physicists work on complex clinical teams in many respects from the multidisciplinary teams including physicians to do symmetrists as well as people from various backgrounds, beliefs and lifestyles. Understanding more objectively how each person experiences the same space is vital to developing trust, empathy, and better team collaboration and communication. This session will allow all participants to hear how marginalized voices in our field experience their workplace and give voice to points of view that rarely get the spotlight. Members of aapm's equity, diversity, and inclusion committee will lead the discussion on what it means to be a medical physicist from their community and how they managed to be authentic in the clinic, classroom and beyond and give advice on how to create space for everyone to feel included, valued, seen, and heard.

It's really hard to tell at this point but I think years from now this will be one of the most destructive things that RFK Jr did at HHS. Mammograms, FIT tests and colonoscopies, diabetes, blood pressure, depression screens. All of these are as widely available as they are because of USPSTF.

You do not have to keep getting sick, and you definitely cannot keep being a vector that sickens, disables, and kills others. It is anti-progressive, anti-humanist behavior to keep ignoring a disease that, as you all say, isn’t going anywhere. It’s time to adapt. Or…well, you know the rest.

Simple yellow flyer with abstract light blue scribble designs surrounding the title, timing, presenter headshots, and presentation titles for a conference symposium. At the top, in a dark blue box, it specifies 'hybrid symposium',below which the title states 'Charting the Learning Sciences Neuroverse: Theorizing and Building Neurodiversity-Affirming STEM Education.' Under that, the presentation titles are:

When the data on which we make guidelines and recommendations comes almost exclusively from one ancestry group (in this case, white folks of European ancestry), the recommendations will be less effective for those from other backgrounds. That’s part of why health equity matters.
Important concern that PRS in their current form risk exacerbating current disparities in medicine

Non-European training data is limited ...
(Figure shows almost all generic data related to cardiovascular disease comes from those of European descent)

... Leading to reduced PRS performance in Non-Europeans

(Figure shows polygenic risk scores perform worse among those with East Asian and African ancestry)
