‘My son genuinely believed it was real’: Parents are letting little kids play with AI. Are they wrong?
Some believe AI can spark their child’s imagination through personalized stories and generative images. Scientists are wary of its effect on creativity

longer required physical activity. Without exercise,
our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al
starts doing our knowledge work.

At a really fundamental level Leo XIV is just a person with sound, well-reasoned, moral stances on the world and how life should be lived who isn't afraid to say those things in public. That kind of person simply does not make sense to business leaders and politicians for whom speech is convenience.

The human brain is profoundly, fundamentally and inexorably tuned to social behavior. This chair is a guy because the fusiform face area, present in both temporal lobes of the brain, is so keen to identify faces that you can fake them with three dots arranged into an inverted triangle Behold: •.•

Every generation a law (like Patriot Act), product (like opioids), technology (like automatic weapons) seems to do something the ruling class desires and those with better sense point out how much worse it might make society and we're told don't worry, we'll be responsible! They never are.

My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as “the adult position,” akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Let’s be very clear — war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.

In 2026 I want all of the decent people to remember one thing. You aren’t meant to be this disciplined, this self-sacrificing to survive. The environment is supposed to support good living. We can have that. You are not a failure. That is politics. That is all.

Yearly reminder that you CAN just become a different person, you're not as imprisoned in your life as you think. You can just be the one who dresses nice or exercises or reads a lot, or whatever. You can just start doing it, some people might make fun of you but they don't really care.

This gets right at my core opinion about AGI: we're not going to get anything like actual "intelligence" from a brain in a jar (or a chip in a computer). Intelligence is ultimately about interacting with the world; only embodied creatures can develop it.

A reminder to all scientists & data viz people 🧪: It's Spooky Science Time. Adjust your models to use the paranormal distribution 👻from now until November 1st.
Stolen from the Internet, a cartoon:
A "normal distribution" showing the standard bell-shaped curve with x-axis ticks.
Then below it a ghost-in-a-sheet hovers above a ticked x-axis below which is labeled "paranormal distribution"
The joke is that this kind of ghost is vaguely bell-shaped.

Increasingly, my only mindset has been 'the only way out is through.' Get more weird. Become more niche. Cultivate less broadly marketable stuff. If people come out of this being feral little trash goblins, it will be a response to outside stimulus and nothing else. That's totally on them.
