David Kynaston might be the best kind of historian. Decades of archival research distilled into huge, acclaimed histories of finance and modern Britain. Then: "Enough of that, time to write about cricket."

Unfortunately far away. I'm in the UK, so looking for digital scans. It's just disappointing that the slowness has lasted for such a long period with no mention by LoC.

Wanted to look up some newspapers on the Library of Congress website for some research. It's still so slow. I think it's been over a year of it just being a terrible site to use. I remember I used to fly though newspapers a few years ago and now it takes minutes to load one image.

It was working fine earlier today when I downloaded an article, but it's now giving me errors. Perhaps it's just maintenance. How many people are using it on a beautiful Saturday evening? Well, at least two.

Cambridge University should have known better, Fleet Street should have known better, the people hungrily absorbing every bit of news about it, making newsrooms feel like they had to keep going with it as a story, should have known better, horrible horrible horrible

I honestly agree. While not an immediate risk to everyone, there are wild fires going on and some can be fast moving with the wind. This warning could save lives and that's probably the key

Well, that was a fucking ride.
A cropped screenshot of an article section titled "Gary Larson cartoon incident" from a Tumblr page. The text describes a controversy involving a Far Side cartoon and Jane Goodall.

_____________

Gary Larson cartoon incident

_____________

In 1987 Gary Larson published a Far Side cartoon of two chimpanzees grooming, in which one discovers a blonde hair and says, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?"[127] The Jane Goodall Institute called the cartoon an "atrocity" in a letter drafted by its lawyers to Larson and his syndicate. Goodall, who was in Africa at the time, later found the cartoon amusing.[128]

She went on to name it her favourite depiction of herself in pop culture.[129] Larson offered profits from sales of a shirt featuring the cartoon to the Jane Goodall Institute.[130]

Goodall wrote the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy.[131] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals.

In 1988 Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania.[128] While there, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.[127][132]

Celebrating this day six years ago (June 7 2020) when the good people of Bristol tore down the statue of enslaver Edward Colston during a Black Lives Matter protest, and threw him in the river. What a splash this brave act made.
Digital photograph of Black Lives Matter protests in Bristol, 07/07/2020. Photographed by Keir Gravil. Crowds are gathered at the Floating Harbour (near Pero’s Bridge) and a statue of Edward Colston, with ropes attached, is making a splash in the water. ‘We the Curious’ (science centre) is in the background. Many of the crowd wear face masks (because of Coronavirus), and a lot of them are photographing the event. Edward Colston statue plinth in Bristol, with a cardboard plaque reading 'The plaque is dedicated to the slaves that were taken from their homes'.Metal plaque on Bristol harbour reading: June 7th, 2020: At this spot, during worldwide anti-racism protests, a statue celebrating the 17th century slave-trader Edward Colton was thrown into the harbour by the people of Bristol. Various campaigns to have the statue removed through official channels had been frustrated.' It is followed by this verse:
"You came down easy in the end.
As you landed
A piece of you fell off, broke away,
And inside, nothing but air.
This whole time, you were hollow"

What a great thing to note down in official board meeting minutes.
Typewritten document. The paper is aged, with a slightly textured, light grey or blue tint. At the top left, the underlined word "DARP" is typed. Centered and underlined below it is the heading: "DUNCAN, GILBEY & MATHESON BOARD MEETING 23/6".

The main text contains two numbered points:

1. Unutterably tedious.

2. General Manager's Report
