A writing career is hard. Sometimes it feels more like a gambling habit: it costs more than it gives back. Even if you love it, as I do, while it pummels you into submission (after submission), you just can’t quite quit. They call it a vocation, but it's really just a bad habit.

Really begs the question how much he has donated to 'Progress Ireland' to push his deregulation agenda doesn't it? Calls for wealth taxes on the super-rich are growing across the world and People Before Profit will renew our call for a tax on multi-millionaires in Budget 2027.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

Here's the thing, though, and take this for whatever it's worth to yourself: receiving a rejection is like seeing a signpost on the side of the road for somewhere you're not heading. Keep going where you're going.

When masked men organise violence, patrol neighbourhoods, intimidate families and drive people from their homes, Northern Irish people recognise patterns that many English commentators seem unable to see. This is an attempt by loyalist gangs to make themselves releavant. 3/

Someone’s finally done it - a co-op taxi app, run by the drivers, charging only the meter fare with no commission to gougers. Uber and their ilk only drop fares to shove them sky high again when they’ve killed the competition. Support Irish Co-ops! #SpeirGorm

I am old enough to remember the vitriol directed at random humanities scholars' work complaining about the totalizing tendencies of capitalism to corrupt, colonize, or co-opt everything. I also lived long enough to read long term coverage of the literal attempt to privatize thinking in the newspaper

please, think about the damage you might cause before sending an invoice
It's time to talk about something very personal.

Receiving an invoice from a freelancer is very triggering.

There, I said it.

The thought of money leaving my account gives me distress.

That's why it can take me 6, 10, sometimes even 15 months to transfer it.

There is nothing more anxiety inducing than having to pay someone for a job they've done for you.

I once received an invoice from my gardener and immediately threw my phone into the ocean.

It's debilitating.

I wish I could pay people on time, but my emotions won't let me.

So please, if you are upset, just remember the person on the other end refusing to pay you is also a human.

And they're going through a lot.

We should all contact your councillors and let them know that if they endorse McGregor, they lose our votes forever. They’re probably already being inundated with bot emails, claiming to be local residents, trying to persuade them to back the rapist. We need to counteract that.

Yes, and the pressure to never admit to having emotions (never mind weakness) is why men and women suffer similar levels of depression and loneliness, but more men are killing themselves. Let boys be boys, by which I mean, let them be themselves in every facet.

When my kids were very small, sometimes people saw me give them my phone to play (sound muted) games in a cafe. They did not see the previous several hours of playgroup, walks, library, park where the kids had my full attention. Sometimes parents just need to be able to drink one cup of tea in peace
