Today is the 117th consecutive day somewhere in the UK has recorded a temperature of 20°C or higher. The 11th of June was the last time we didn't reach this threshold. Fresher air comes in on Wednesday allowing temperatures to fall, and likely to stay just below 20°C.

Baffling to see The Times claim that Burnham “did not mention energy” in his conference speech. Energy was referenced no fewer than 10 times, alongside a major announcement of £4bn for Great British Grid to cut connection delays and bring bills down. Britain's energy challenge was front & centre.

Excellent piece - understanding the construction of these arguments against popular climate policy can also (as Sam writes!) lets us recognise these arguments when made against other policies too, and how to dismantle them. We must all learn to read the opposition’s playbook!

Very depressing that this highly misleading statistic is now being promoted by Conservative Shadow Home Secretary. Philp contrasts “foreign born” with “British citizens” but a lot of the people in the “foreign born” group ARE British citizens.

The record temperatures, wildfires and drought we have seen in the UK & Europe is climate change in action. There is hope. It has been a record year for renewable energy generation, all new homes will have solar panels from next year. But we must accelerate the transition to clean & green energy.

LCEF is proud to have supported this - with extreme heat becoming a regular occurrence in UK summers, it’s vital that we help keep people safe, cool and comfortable in their homes, as well as decarbonising to combat climate change. Air to air heat pumps will be an important part of the solution.

Several large wildfires happened - or are happening - in the UK, including Greater Manchester, Derbyshire and Suffolk, adding further strain to water supplies. Farmers are harvesting crops early and cereal yields are expected to be poorer due to dry conditions and high temps.

An estimated 550 people died from heat-related causes in May and approx 2,200 during June in England and Wales. A red Heat-Health Alert was issued this summer- only the second time this has happened since the alert system began -signalling risk to life even among healthy people.

It’s a low bar but I am delighted to see this. The UK has had four widespread instances of extreme heat this year. The national May temperature record was broken at 35.1°C in West London, and June bringing temperatures above 37°C in East Anglia.
