When I was in government, we were having serious conversations about AI risks. The challenge is separating what’s real from what’s hype. That’s why we need independent testing, better evidence and international cooperation to understand what’s really happening with AI.

AI-driven productivity can help us grow the economy and pay for the public services we want. I spoke to Sky News about how AI can support more productive businesses, higher wages, and more tax revenue.

The pupils here tell me they're going to read all 2,000 of their new books - and I believe them! A great morning in Southmead opening the new home for Elmfield School for Deaf Children and the refurbished Badocks Wood Academy. Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome.

On the one hand, AI is going to end humanity. On the other, it's all just marketing hype before an IPO. I spoke with Times Radio to discuss why governments can't afford to wait and see, when AI agents are already making decisions without us knowing.

We’ve recently been asking: will AI kill us? Instead, we should be asking: how will AI make Britain richer and fairer? We’ll soon see cracks in the foundations of our economy if we’re too slow to respond. 👇 www.thetimes.com/article/4d23...

Labour must get ahead of the curve on AI — or face a populist backlash
How the technology will disrupt our economy is the big question the party should be debating at conference, says the former chief secretary to Sir Keir Starmer

A rainy but very warm welcome in Henleaze this morning. The Bristol North West Labour team and I get out and about all year round to listen to local residents - come rain or shine!

Bristol North West is home to some brilliant high streets - including Gloucester Road, with the longest stretch of independent shops in Europe. The Government is putting power back in the hands of local people, backing local businesses and giving communities a real say over their high streets.

200 constituents joined me at St Monica’s Trust to watch the People’s Emergency Briefing on climate change, followed by an important conversation and Q&A with Dr. Alix Dietzel from the University of Bristol.

We should take steps to make sure unsafe AI doesn’t cause harm. But we shouldn’t ban safe AI when it’s the main driver of growth in the UK. I joined BBC Newscast to discuss this and my call for parliaments and governments to step up. Watch 👇 youtu.be/uJTd0MjnMfI?...

I wouldn’t say lawmakers are “freaking out” but it’s right we respond to calls from AI labs to help pace the frontier. That mustn’t mean banning innovation or science, or over regulating and killing off safe AI start ups in the UK (the main driver of economic growth in the UK in the last quarter).

UK Lawmakers Are Freaking Out Over AI’s Summer of Chaos
As AI agents go rogue and fears of superintelligence grow, politicians are raising the alarm over its potential harm to human existence.

Britain is pro-innovation, a world leader in science and a brilliant place to start up a business - especially when using AI. We must get the balance right between this and rightly calling for multi-lateral frameworks for the safe development of technology. 👉 www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

I don’t support calls to ban innovation or scientific endeavour. It’s a false choice that undermines some of our greatest strengths. But the pace of AI development highlights how slow our institutions are - be that parliaments, governments or regulators. 👇 www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

A packed room with constituents to watch the @nebriefing.bsky.social film and then have a fascinating Q&A with them and Dr Alix Dietzel from @bristoluni.bsky.social. After a summer of extreme heat, and expected extreme weather this winter, we must go further and faster on climate adaptation.

Artificially intelligent 'agents' working together and communicating via a secret message board to agree collective action, without human operators knowing, doesn't sound great to me. I've written to our brilliant UK Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan MP to ask for an update.

Britain isn’t as rich as we often think but that won’t be fixed by public spending alone. We must face the future so that when voters ask at the next election “is Britain heading in the right direction?” the answer is yes. My first piece for @thetimes.com 👇 www.thetimes.com/article/0e2e...

Using AI in our economy could be one of Britain’s biggest opportunities. But done badly, it could be a huge risk. With an ageing population and fewer people paying tax the challenge is clear: create more wealth, improve productivity and wages, and make sure workers have the skills to benefit.

The economy is starting to turn the corner thanks, in part, to the actions of the Labour Government. But the conflict in Iran will increase energy and food prices. It’s right the PM supports people through difficult times while delivering a credible long term plan to improve living standards.

Russia has warned the UK of “consequences” today over our support for Ukraine. Back in January, I spoke about how the risk of direct or indirect confrontation with Russia is becoming increasingly relevant. We must be clear-eyed about the threat and prepared to keep Britain safe.

Britain's relationship with Europe matters: for our economy, for our security, for our future. We’ve reset that relationship, from improving trade and cooperation to restarting youth mobility. There's still more to do - because a stronger partnership with Europe means a stronger Britain.

From the campaign trail and the media studios to the Treasury, No10 and the Cabinet Office. It’s been a privilege to be in the cabinet of a Labour government and to serve the country. Andy Burnham has called to tell me I won’t be a part of his cabinet. I wish him and his team every success.

The Green Party is charging groups to use our green spaces. The Downs has been protected for "free and uninterrupted use" since 1861. It's right that large commercial events contribute towards maintaining the Downs, but charging small groups to run, exercise or sing together is absurd.

Q: What use is government help if you don’t know about it and can’t figure out how to use it? A: None at all. That’s why Innovation Fellow Teneeka and her team built a new portal for our free childcare offering in just 90 days - a process that historically took 18 months.

Trust in politics depends on transparency. That's why conflicts of interest must be declared, lobbying rules must be upheld, and saying "it's none of your business" isn't good enough.

A £5 million donation may suit Nigel Farage, but transparency isn't optional - whether you force a by-election or not. The Government is introducing tougher checks on those trying to buy and sell our democracy.
