Speaking of common birds, here's that bundle of twitchiness and constant motion known as a White Wagtail (Motacilla alba). This is a juvenile. Over the past month, billions have been moving through... anywhere where there is little bit of water. #BirdingHungary #wagtails #FallMigration2026

I’ve been meaning to ask Husband to adjust the sprinkler water. Until today that is - then a Northern Flicker took a sip, a sparrow dipped in, scrub jays splashed, and robins rolled all over in the puddle.

Misty morning pond. Norwich VT, September 2026 #ECK #Photography #PhotographersOfBluesky #Scape #Landscape #Stunday
This image shows a view of a still, reflective pond on a misty morning seen from behind a set of tall green bullrushes. The eye is captured by a central rush, rising from the lower right corner, whose tip ends in a brownish-orange seed head at nearly the center of the image. This rush draws the eye to the far left shore of the pond, where another set of rushes and bushes are reflected in the nearly mirror-like surface of the pond. Behind the central rush, other slightly more distant rushes rise from left to right, framing a tree on the right shore of the pond, and its reflection in the water. The image is finished by the appearance of part of a willow on the left border of the frame, and more distant trees behind the pond that gradually vanish in the mist.

Turf-covered houses nestled at the base of a mountain. Lofoten, Norway, August 2026 #ECK #Photography #PhotographersOfBluesky #Scape #Landscape #Nature #WindowsOnWednesday
This image shows a cluster of houses, several with turf roofs, nestled near the foot of a mountain in Lofoten. The houses are quite close to the sea, and a curve of sandy beach appears in the lower third of the frame, mostly on the right. A grassy field in the midground leads to the houses, set among hills near the center left of the frame. In the near distance beyond the houses is a set of dark, jagged moutains, their peaks about one third of the way from the top of the frame. The image is finished by the sky overhead, filled with a foreboding looking cloud, but also patches here and there of summer blue.

Marty’s photo of the day #5177: I watched this great blue heron for parts of three days. She was the only great blue heron hanging out on the gravel beach in front of Deb’s and my Johnstone Strait campsite. The heron was particularly interesting to watch when the tide came in. She ruled a spit of rocky beach that jutted into the ocean. As the water rose, she would flap her wings, rearranging the many ducks and gulls to make sure she stood on the last piece of land before the tide submerged it. Then she’d fly off into the forest.

(Photographed earlier this month on Vancouver Island.)

A great blue heron pauses while fishing at sunrise at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron faces the camera with its head turned to its right, revealing the left side of its face. Its gracefully curved neck forms a beautiful backward “S” shape. The heron’s reflection appears in the water below, where clumps of green algae float on the surface. A softly blurred wall of cattails fills the background, providing a natural setting that complements the heron.

A beautiful portrait of a great blue heron in the wetland habitat it depends on for survival.
