Sea lions on high alert! Moments before I shot this photo, a pod of orca whales passed close by, and there was a huge splash. Many of us watching from a boat thought we had witnessed an orca taking a sea lion. Our guide, however, proclaimed that the orcas were fish-eaters, not mammal-eaters.

From a sea lion’s point of view, since they can’t exactly ask the whales what kind of meat they eat, they were rightfully frightened.

Later, I did some research and learned that fish-eating orcas don’t steal occasional seals or sea lions on the side. Their strict choice of food is passed down through generations of family groups. Mammal-eating orcas also exist in the region, and they are called Bigg’s killer whales.

One way to tell the difference is by dropping a microphone into the water and listening. We did that. Fish-eating orcas are constantly communicating. Mammal-eating orcas, on the other hand, rarely make noise or echolocate while hunting, which prevents seals and sea lions from hearing them.

Marty’s photo of the day #5177: I watched this great blue heron for parts of three days. She was the only great blue heron hanging out on the gravel beach in front of Deb’s and my Johnstone Strait campsite. The heron was particularly interesting to watch when the tide came in. She ruled a spit of rocky beach that jutted into the ocean. As the water rose, she would flap her wings, rearranging the many ducks and gulls to make sure she stood on the last piece of land before the tide submerged it. Then she’d fly off into the forest.

Marty’s photo of the day #5172: When Deb and I walked the remote gravel roads on Vancouver Island, we frequently found banana slugs and bear poop near to each other. Since the slugs didn’t eat the poop, I reasoned that the bears must gorge themselves on the slugs. When I researched later, I learned that the slugs secrete a thick numbing layer of mucus that protects them from bears and other mammals. So the proximity of the world’s second largest slugs to bear poop was because of other factors.

She never did grab a fish. Instead, she heard a click from my camera (Damn! I should have set it to silent mode) and hopped over to the next boulder.

Marty’s photo of the day #5168: Of all the many highlights of Deb’s and my Vancouver Island visit, the moments around the time I shot this photo were my favorite. We had pitched our tent at a remote campsite on the Johnstone Strait, and, like the two previous mornings, I got up before sunrise hoping to photograph whales. On this final morning, I could hear orca whales breathing on the opposite side of the strait but couldn’t spot them. A half-hour later, the whales swam into view. They were heading for my side of the strait!

I was kneeling at the edge of a spit of rocky beach that the incoming tide was about to submerge. While orcas grabbing seals off Vancouver Island’s shores are extremely rare, when an orca headed directly toward me, I instinctively moved several steps back. That also helped my aim, as I was using an 800mm telephoto lens (which unlike a zoom lens, has a fixed focal length), and the whales were often too close to get into frame.

Because of the orca’s closeness, their brief time on the surface, and my telephoto lens, none of my really close shots turned out. Those views will remain in my head as wonderful memories. Today’s photo is one of my favorites, taken after I moved back from the edge of the water.

Marty’s photo of the day #5167: The salmon were running in a river near one of Deb’s and my campsites on Vancouver Island. Most of the time I carried two cameras: my Canon R7 with a telephoto lens for distant shots, and my all-in-one Olympus Tough TG-7 for wide-angle and macro shots. I hadn’t planned any underwater photography, but my Olympus also doubles as my underwater camera.

Seeing the salmon, I decided to attempt some underwater shots. The weather outside was in the low 60s, and the river was incredibly cold. I waded in barefoot and promised myself that I wouldn’t wimp out no matter how numb my feet got. The rocks were slippery and sharp, adding to my discomfort. Also, the sun reflecting off the water’s surface made spotting the fish difficult. But hey, the harder the shot the more satisfying it becomes.

As if that wasn’t enough, the salmon judged me as being a white-skinned bear. When their instinct to swim upstream overruled their fear, they rocketed past me faster than my camera could focus. In all, it gave me a whole new respect for the local bears, which had to catch the speedy salmon.

This photo was as good as I could do in the forty-five minutes I spent in the river. Later I will post a salmon video and a much sharper salmon shot, looking down at a large school with my Canon R7.

Marty’s photo of the day #5166: Deb and I have traveled all seven continents looking for rare and interesting wildlife and have seen creatures that look like they should be from another planet. These pelagic gooseneck barnacles, which Deb found as we were walking a beach on Vancouver Island, are the strangest creatures we’ve ever seen. It was like they were one part leech, one part clam, and one part creature from a science-fiction movie. Then, when I knelt down to photograph them, they opened their shells and waved their feathery cirri! I immediately thought “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Pelagic gooseneck barnacles aren’t rare, but this colony was out of place. They are filter feeders that attach themselves to floating items like the piece of driftwood this one was on. They are typically found in tropical and subtropical seas worldwide, but, like this colony, are sometimes carried into colder seas by currents. Around Vancouver Island they could survive, but it would be too cold for them to reproduce.

One more thing: In medieval times, people thought these barnacles turned into barnacle geese because no one knew where the geese migrated.

Marty’s photo of the day #5165: Deb, Nellie, and I just completed three nights at what may be the most awesome campsite in North America. We found a private, one-tent-campsite right on the Johnstone Strait in the northern region of Vancouver Island. From our private beach, we watched numerous bird species, a sea lion, a humpback whale, two pods of dolphins, and a large pod of orca whales (we saw the orcas on two of the three mornings).

This morning, I got up before sunrise and took my camera to the edge of the water. I could hear loud orca breaths on the far side of the strait, but it took about a half hour before I spotted them. Suddenly they were about fifty feet out from where I was standing! They looked so much bigger than when I photographed them from a boat last week. It was the best morning ever! I’m going to hold off sharing the orca photos I took this morning until we get home.

In the meantime, here’s a shot of Nellie on the point (which is submerged during high tide) from this morning. She is standing just about where I was standing when the orcas paid me a visit. Don’t worry, Nellie is not being “orca bait.” The orcas had moved up the strait.

Tomorrow we head into the island’s interior (Strathcona Park) to explore the old growth forest.

Marty’s photo of the day #5164: I just love the far northern, Port Hardy, region of Vancouver Island! I’ve explored all seven continents, and this is the best area for birds I’ve seen. One reason is because the tides here are so extreme. Some bays go from ten feet deep to hundreds of acres of dry land in a matter of hours—leaving a smorgasbord of crustaceans and other creatures for the birds to gorge on. But alas, after five days, it’s time to move on. Deb, Nellie, and I are hoping we’ve outlasted the summer tourists and that our favorite tent camping spot on the Johnstone Strait has opened up. If not, we’ll look for an alternative campsite.

I photographed this bald eagle at low tide yesterday evening.
