J G Ballard, 1974: "Will modern technology provide us with hithterto undreamed-of means for tapping our own psycho-pathologies? Is this harnessing of our innate perversity conceivably of benefit to us? Is there some deviant logic unfolding more powerful than that provided by reason?" Yes, no, yes.

just want to be able to read my book in peace to escape from it all 🙃
3 photos showing the front, back and inner sleeve note of a second hand hardback copy of Kingdom Come by J. G. Ballard

The cover has a full page artistic black-and-white photo of 2 escalators in a shopping centre . The title is in white gothic font lowercase capitals, the author's name in bright yellow Back of the book shows the escalators again, with "THE SUBURBS DREAM OF VIOLENCE" in white capital letters over the top[Inner sleeve book blurb, black text it bright yellow background]
Richard Pearson, unemployed advertising executive and life-long rebel, is driving out to Brooklands, a motorway town on the M25. A few weeks earlier his father was fatally wounded at the Metro-Centre, a vast shopping mall in the middle of this apparently peaceful town, when a deranged mental patient opened fire on a crowd of shoppers.

When the main suspect is released without charge thanks to the dubious testimony of self-styled pillars of the community including Julia Goodwin, the doctor who treated his father on his deathbed - Richard suspects that there is more to his father's death than meets the eye, a more sinister element lurking behind the pristine facades of the labyrinthine mall.

Determined to unravel the mystery, Richard soon realises that the Metro-Centre, with its round-the-clock cable channel and sports clubs, lies at the very heart of his father's death. Consumerism rules the lives of everyone in the motorway towns and feeds the cravings of this bored community with its desperate need for something new, whatever the cost. Riots frequently terrorise the streets, immigrant communities are set upon by roving bands of hooligans and sports events mushroom into jingoistic political rallies. Gradually, Richard finds himself drawn into this world, caught up in the workings of the mall, exposed to the insides of the consumer dream, and starts upon dismantling this wayward vision his advertising career helped to found

In this gripping, dystopian tour de force, J.G. Ballard holds up a mirror to middle England, reflecting an unsettling image of suburbia and revealing the darker forces at work beneath the gloss of consumerism and flag-waving patriotism.

My chronological readthrough of J.G. Ballard has brought me to 1963’s ‘The Time-Tombs’. One of the few stories to be set on another planet, it plays effectively with those tropes immortalised by Tomb-raiding adventure tales. Virgil Finlay’s striking cover certainly ramps up the drama too. #booksky

One thing I do like about JG Ballard and greatly relate to: your man there liked a nice relaxing holiday
Vermilion Sands is my puess at what the future will actually be like. It is a curious paradox that almost all science fiction. however far removed in time and space, is really about the present day. Very few attempts have been made to visualize a unique and self-contained future that offers no warnines to us.
Perhaps because of this cautionary tone, so many of science fiction's notional futures are zones of unrelieved grimness.
Even its heavens are like other people's hells.
By contrast, Vermilion Sands is a place where 1 would be happy to live. I once described this overlit desert resort as an exotic suburb of my mind, and something about the word
'suburb' - which I then used pejoratively - now convinces me that I Was on the right track in my pursuit of the day after tomorrow. As the countryside vanishes under a top-dressing of chemicals, and as cities provide little more than an urban context for traffic intersections, the suburbs are at last coming into their own. The skies are larger, the air more generous, the clock less urgent. Vermilion Sands has more than its full share of dreams and illusions, fears and fantasies, but the frame for them is less confining. I like to think, too, that it celebrates the neglected virtues of the glossy, lurid and bizarre.
Where is Vermilion Sands? I suppose its spiritual home lies somewhere between Arizona and Ipanema Beach, but in recent years I have been delighted to see it popping up elsewhere
- above all, in sections of the 3,000-mile-long linear city that stretches from Gibraltar to Glyfada Beach along the norther shores of the Mediterranean, and where each summer Europe lies on its back in the sun. That posture, of course, is the hallmark of Vermilion Sands and, I hope, of the future - notmerely that no-one has to work, but that work is the ultimate play, and play the ultimate work.
The earliest of these tales, Prima Belladonna' waste a short story I published, seventeen years ago, and the imaged this desert resort has remained remarkably constant ever since.
I wait optimistically for it to take concrete shape around me.

Welcome to the the NSA, Palantir, and Flock. A population with "no qualms about the invasion of their privacy by government agencies and data-processing organizations, and if anything welcomed these invisible intrusions, using them for their own purposes"
JG Ballard High-Rise.

A new social type was being created by the apartment building, a cool, unemotional personality impervious to the psychological pressures of high-rise life, with minimal needs for privacy, who thrived like an advanced species of machine in the neutral atmosphere. This was the sort of resident who was content to do nothing but sit in his over-priced apartment, watch television with the sound turned down, and wait for his neighbours to make a mistake.

Perhaps the recent incidents represented a last attempt by Wilder and the airline pilots to rebel against this unfolding logic? Sadly, they had little chance of success, precisely because their opponents were people who were content with their lives in the high-rise, who felt no particular objection to an impersonal steel and concrete landscape, no qualms about the invasion of their privacy by government agencies and data-processing organizations, and if anything welcomed these invisible intrusions, using them for their own purposes. These people were the first to master a new kind of late twentieth-century life. They thrived on the rapid turnover of acquaintances, the lack of involvement with others, and the total self-sufficiency of lives which, needing nothing, were never disappointed.

It’s Fantastic! It’s Futuristic! It’s Fatalistic! It’s Science Fiction!
There's a worthwhile documentary struggling to be born in this film which is compromised by its hyperbolic title and a running time of 48 minutes, not nearly enough to contain a history of science fiction, past and present. I'm not a media historian so I can't say whether this was the first serious examination of written science fiction made for British TV but if it wasn't there wouldn't have been many that preceded it.

Brian Aldiss quoting J. G. Ballard in his introduction to the 1979 SF anthology ‘Decade: The 1960s’. You just have to admire Ballard’s wry sense of humour…
Text from the introduction to the SF anthology ‘Decade: The 1960s’ written by Brian Aldiss:
“The ‘space race’ eased an emergence from the Cold War which had dominated the fifties […] and yet….had the aggressiveness of mankind merely stumbled on a new arena for its working out? Commenting on man’s arrival on Luna, J. G. Ballard said, “If I were a Martian, I’d start running now’”
